70% Nerello Mascalese, 30% Nocera. Eight months in 500-litre French oak. Light crimson with soft rim. Fragrant with wild strawberry. Super-fine dry tannins, almost chalky. The 2020 Rosso Peloro is peppery, fresh and floral, with bright cherry and rose hips giving way to hints of cinnamon. It splashes across the palate, potent yet energetic, with tart red berries and juicy acids that excite the senses. The Peloro Rosso finishes long and lightly structured, communicating a classic feel as sweet inner violet tones slowly fade. This is an impressive blend of 70% Nerello Mascalese and 30% Nocera. Le Casematte

There can't be too many wine estates named after WWII gun emplacements, but the three concrete casemattes among the vines designed to protect the Strait of Messina have indeed inspired the name of Le Casematte - "a place where grapevines have supplanted death" they say on their web-site, probably quite profound. Le Casematte was founded in 2008 by former footballer Andrea Barzagli and accountant Gianfranco Sabbatino. The vines are in the north of Sicily, with vineyards rising to 500m above sea-level, and northerly exposures helping to mitigate the southern sun-shine. They are committed to organic farming.
