The 2020 Pommard Tavannes is excellent, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, sweet spices, licorice and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with tangy acids and chalky tannins, it will age with grace. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 90+ L&S (Jan 2022)

(Pillot noted that this hit 15% alcohol in 2020). Here the expressive nose of cassis and black pinot liqueur plays right on the edge of perceptible volatile acidity. Exceptionally rich, even plush, middle weight flavors display unusually good power while coating the palate on the dusty, rustic and noticeably warm finale. This is atypical but it carries its elevated alcohol better than one might assume. Drinking range: 2025 - Rating: 87 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Apr 2022)

This is a big plot which the Pillots use for their massal selections. All old vines, lots of variations on pinot. Deep purple, rich chocolate and fruit cake nose. High acidity. Slightly unfair to this to taste it on the day it is being racked, but I doubt this will be my wine. Nudging 15% though it fermented through without a problem. Tasted: October 2021 Rating: 86-88 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Dec 2021)

Domaine Fernand & Laurent Pillot

The origins of the Pillot family in Chassagne can be traced back to the eighteenth century, when they seem to have been coopers more than vignerons. In the nineteenth century they abandoned barrel-making in favour of enlarging the property in Chassagne. Fernand and Laurent, who is the fourth generation, added to it again in 1992, and then in 2001 Laurent's wife Marie-Anne inherited half of her family's property, the Pommard domaine of Pothier-Rieusset, and Laurent and his father bought the other half. The domaine now stands at 14.5 hectares of vines across almost the whole length of the Côte de Beaune from Santenay to Beaune.

The Domaine is worked according to organic principles and are ploughed – no chemical weedkillers are used. They have also been members of the Dephy-ECO-phyto group, which works to reduce the number of treatments using copper sulphate, since 2012. In 2021 they began the process of organic certification.

Laurent has always managed to pack in a lot alongside his running of the vineyard. He has his own plane which he flies to all corners of France, used keep and hunts hawks, and conducts the Chassagne brass band as well as dabbling in Mayoral duties - on top of being a father of three, Anaïs, Adrien and Eugène. They are all mad about the alps and disappear up the mountains at regular intervals.

Laurent's eldest son Adrien has been travelling the world making wine all over the place for the last few years having completed his training in Beaune. Bringing back lessons learnt in Australia, South Africa and California (and from a stint at Lea & Sandeman), During harvest Adrien is now the one in the winery while Laurent takes charge of the picking team. The wines have long been L&S favourites in both red and white - they represent excellent value, and they age very well too, despite being attractive young. The whites are precise and pure, and not lacking for body and generosity, while the reds are velvety and juicy, beautifully balanced even if drunk young on their expressive Pinot fruit. The domaine was rightfully heralded in Decanter Magazine as 'an address that deserves to be better-known'. Great value and real pleasure across their range.

NSPCC Fine Wine Challenge | 2026

The 30th Anniversary NSPCC Fine Wine Challenge Collection.
Last month, we gathered in London for the 30th Anniversary of the NSPCC Fine Wine Challenge. It was a spectacular evening where the Lea & Sandeman team poured over 2,500 glasses of wine to blind-taste for a room full of eager, competitive palates.
It was a brilliant success, raising over £250,000 for Childline.
To celebrate this milestone, we have assembled a 6-bottle case containing half a dozen of the exceptional wines poured during the quiz, allowing you to recreate the challenge from the comfort of your own dining table.
A portion of the proceeds from every case sold will be donated directly to the NSPCC. These are not simple, entry-level wines designed to be easily guessed. We selected complex, profound expressions from some of our most revered estates to truly test the room.
What is Inside the Anniversary Collection:
2023 SANCERRE Silex Chavignol, Domaine Delaporte: An unusually sumptuous, flint-rich Sancerre with flavours of lemon, honey tea, and chamomile.
2023 ALBERELLI DI GIODO Carricante: The legendary Carlo Ferrini's Sicilian masterpiece. Grown at high altitude on Mount Etna, it crackles with white peach and delicate, salty mineral shadings.
2022 SAINT VÉRAN Les Pommards, Domaine Barraud: A beautifully powerful white Burgundy from 60-year-old vines, displaying excellent volume and a classic, mineral core.
2020 POMMARD Tavannes, Domaine Fernand & Laurent Pillot: A rich, plush, and fleshy Pinot Noir from an entirely massal-selected old-vine plot. Exceptionally concentrated and powerful.
2020 GIGONDAS Clos Derrière Vieille, Domaine Santa Duc: A stunningly elegant, biodynamic southern Rhône blend, aged in oak foudres and clay amphorae. Expect thyme, rosemary, and vivid mountain freshness.
2023 FLEURIE Cuvée Tardive, Clos de La Roilette: Velvety richness, fine ripe tannins, and a core of sweet kirsch liqueur. All you could ever need from Gamay, from an estate that charmingly still uses its 1920s racehorse label.
This case is a masterclass of fine wine. At £230, a slight discount from our usual case price, the shipping is entirely on us.
