CHÂTEAU LA LAGUNE

2021 3ème Cru Classé Ludon

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Ludon
Classification 3ème Cru Classé

70 Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 Merlot, 10 Petit Verdot | 45% new oak | 12.8% | 3.75 pH I tasted 2021 La Lagune alongside the 2019 and 2020 vintages, and it is clear that 2021 is a worthy team member in this pack. While the 2019 shows discreet power and 2020 parades alluring glossiness, 2021 leads with its refined perfume and incredibly refreshing and shiny (but not glossy), silky (but not velvety) fruit. Every element in this wine is refined, and the elusive, green, floral hints (see my note on Château Margaux) that I prize so much in 2021 are also present in this fabulous wine. The 10% addition of Petit Verdot does a superb job of linking the distinguished Cabernet to the textural Merlot making this an exquisite wine with more restraint and composure than many. When I think of La Lagune, I think of balance and calm, and in 2021 these ingredients are augmented with magnificent Cabernet resonance, making it a compelling creation. 18/20 Rating: 18 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jun 2022)

Fresh and fine with tight-grained, lightly stemmy tannins. Violets, raspberries, currants and orange zest. Medium-bodied, tight and fine. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot and 10% petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Rating: 93-94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2022)

Love the beatiful sappy blue fruit that runs through the glass here, and there is character and depth through the palate. Silful winemaking with a feeling of precision, and an impressive tannic frame that holds things in place even while the fresh acidities splice through the fruit and brings things to a finish a little abruptly. 30hl/h yield. Tasted twice. Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 Rating: 91 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2022)

A pretty middle-weight, the 2021 La Lagune offers up inviting aromas of sweet berries and plums mingled with hints of licorice, loamy soil, raw cocoa and cigar wrapper. Medium-bodied, ample and succulent, it's fleshy and seamless, with an ample core of fruit, bright acids and melting tannins. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, it checks in at a modest 12.5% alcohol. Tasted four times, twice at the château. Rating: 90-92 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (May 2022)

Château La Lagune

Haut-Médoc Troisième cru 1855 Château La Lagune is the highest ranked property outside of the principal Haut-Médoc appellations. It is in Ludon-Médoc, about halfway between the village of Margaux and the city of Bordeaux. Like so many Bordeaux estates, the early 20th Century was a period of considerable decline - by the time La Lagune's saviour George Brunette bought the near derelict estate in 1958 there were just 4ha of vineyard left. He set about a whirlwind renovation and a complete replanting of the vineyard, although a few short years later, in 1961, he sold La Lagune to Champagne Ayala. Today, Château La Lagune is owned by the Frey family who continue to drive the estate forward. The 80ha of sandy-gravel vineyard are planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and an unusually high 10% Petit Verdot. The Grand Vin spends 18 months in wood, with 55% being new every year (down from a previously over impressive 100% new). Interestingly, once La Lagune barriques have been used twice, they are sent off to the Rhône to be used by Paul Jaboulet, also owned by the Frey family. Today, Château La Lagune is one of the wines to look out for in the Haut-Médoc, usually outperforming its Third Growth status, whilst its less than lofty appellation keeps a lid on the price. Certified organic from the 2016 vintage.
