Deeply fruited with blackberry and plum fruit, some coffee and dark chocolate. So balanced and delicious with such great fruit concentration, that never gets heavy, with such a gorgeous balancing acidity, rich tannins give structure and create a canvas for the superbly delivered fruit. The 2021 Faro is dark, rich and toasty in the glass, blending dried black cherries with grilled herbs and crushed violet candies. This mixes savory and sweet, with a core of tart wild berry fruits and chalky mineral tones offsetting rosy inner florals and spice. Grippy tannins define the finish as the 2021 tapers off long and structured, with a sour-cranberry crunchiness. This zesty Faro is built for the cellar. Le Casematte
There can't be too many wine estates named after WWII gun emplacements, but the three concrete casemattes among the vines designed to protect the Strait of Messina have indeed inspired the name of Le Casematte - "a place where grapevines have supplanted death" they say on their web-site, probably quite profound. Le Casematte was founded in 2008 by former footballer Andrea Barzagli and accountant Gianfranco Sabbatino. The vines are in the north of Sicily, with vineyards rising to 500m above sea-level, and northerly exposures helping to mitigate the southern sun-shine. They are committed to organic farming.
