BANDOL

2022 Cuvée Classique 'Lulu & Lucien' Domaine Tempier

EN PRIMEUR

Blueberry, blackberry, raspberry jam and candied cherry – there is loads of enjoyable fruit at the fore here, intense, powerful and pleasurable. It is followed by a panoply of herbs, from thyme, rosemary and even a touch of tarragon. This marries into a wonderful, long finish with the structure completely in balance. L&S (Jun 2025)

Shows a seductive prettiness, with violet and spice box notes layered with crunchy red plum and graphite shavings, plus flickers of Mourvèdre meatiness. Oak sits nicely in the backdrop, while salty, savory acidity buoys this along and brings freshness to the finish, which is marked by silky, polished tannins. Drink now through 2032. Drinking range: 2026 - 2032 Rating: 91 The Wine Spectator, www.winespectator.com (Apr 2026)

Domaine Tempier is an old family estate, owned by the Peyrauds since Lucien Peyraud married Lucie Tempier in 1936. The family was largely instrumental in getting the appellation of Bandol established in 1941. The reds are the quintessential expression of Mourvèdre, grown on terraced vineyards on steep hills around the 'plan du Castellet'.

Traditional vinification using indigenous yeasts, the wines are aged in a variety of different sized oak (25 to 75hl) for between 18 and 20 months. These are wines which are capable of long ageing, but even young they have a finesse of fruit and earthy flavour, coupled with fine-grained tannins, which lift them above the generality of Provençal reds.
