CHÂTEAU BEAUREGARD

2022 Pomerol

Grapes Cab Franc, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol

67% Merlot, 27& Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. 45% new oak. 14% alc. Beauregard is a more attacking Right Bank wine than many in 2022, and the grippiness on the finish warns the drinker that patience is needed. The aroma and palate are fine-tuned, and this is a structured wine, but the tannins are too dominant at the stage of its evolution, and I worry that it will take too long to even out. Despite this, the core flavours are rich and pure, so while it might take a while, it will come good in the end. Rating: 17.+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2023)

The 2022 Beauregard is gorgeous. Dark, ample and seductive, the 2022 is bursting with dark red-toned fruit, spice, leather and dried herbs. There’s tremendous depth and textural resonance, elements that blossom with a bit of time in the glass. In 2022, the blend is 67% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, the first time Cabernet Sauvignon has been in this blend. Notable. Drinking range: 2027 - 2042 Rating: 92-94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2023)

The aromas are shimmering in a flattering manner, with clear notes of toast and spice. The tactile aspect of this wine is rounded, with substance of medium intensity that becomes more slender on the finish, leaving like a trail of seductively forward flavours reminiscent of chocolate and preserved chestnuts. At this stage, this 2022 seems less convincing than the very successful 2020. Rating: 89-91 La Revue du Vin de France (May 2023)

17.5-ha just opposite Ch Petit Village. Joint venture by the owners of Galeries Lafayette with the Cathiards of Ch Smith Haut Lafitte. Certified organic in 2014. Much stricter selection now and only about half goes into the grand vin. Vineyard has been restructured. Mainly gravel and clay on the edge of the plateau of Catusseau with only half actually on the plateau. In 2022 they did a green harvest to be sure to ripen the grapes fully. For the first time they included a full block of their Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 2016, which makes up 6% of the blend which is otherwise 27% Cabernet Franc and 67% Merlot, picked 2–14 September. Very soft extraction indeed. Small, aromatic berries. Cask sample. Notably deep blackish purple. Heady nose that’s clearly not 100% Merlot. Very sweet palate entry. Very round and almost soft, an utter charmer but without an amazing depth of tannin and with miraculous freshness on the dry (not sweet) end. Still very youthful but it should develop a finish eventually. Ripe tannins. Drinking range: 2026 - 2038 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2023)

Château Beauregard

Unusually for Pomerol, Château Beauregard has a rather fine château built in 1795 that they proudly display on the label. Rather than having a fine view – or beau regard – the estate is named after the Beauregard family who owned it in the 17th Century. Since acquisition by Vignobles-Foncier in 1991 the whole estate has been renovated, and all the Cabernet Sauvignon replaced with more suitable Merlot, and Beauregard has been set on an upward trajectory. The recent (2014) sale of the estate to the Moulin-Houzé family offers optimism for further improvement, not least because at the same time a minority share was taken by the Caithard family whose stewardship Château Smith Haut Lafitte has yielded great results. Sitting just east of the village of Catusseau, Beauregard is practically on the border with Saint Emilion and can boast Cheval Blanc as a near neighbour. The 17.5ha of vineyard are planted with 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc with the best vines being nearer the château on the Pomerol plateau and its more typical clay soil. The average age of the vines is around 35 years.
