CHÂTEAU DURFORT VIVENS

2022 2ème Cru Classé Margaux

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Margaux
Classification 2ème Cru Classé

84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 13.5% alc, 30 hl/ha, 3.75 pH. The Lurtons started biodynamics at Durfort in 2008, and the first 100% vintage was in 2012. They were then certified in 2016 by Demeter. It follows that this wine is as alive as any I have tasted on the Left Bank. They harvested in two distinct tries – from 1st to 15th September and then from 19th September to 12th October. You will note that this is one of the latest harvests on the Left Bank, and they waited because there was still freshness and tension in the berries. Gonzague Lurton reported that this was the best vintage he could remember for Merlot. There is pulsing minerality throughout this wine, framed by a haunting perfume and a super-dry finish. The mid-palate is gravel-soaked, tense and wonderfully floral, demanding attention. There is a wildness and a faint smokiness here, which is alluring but strict. This is a fascinating wine with an incredibly bright outlook and a ramrod-straight palate. Rating: 18+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2023)

The reputation of this estate's wines is growing, and justifiably so. This 2022 has been intelligently made, with 70% in barrels and the rest in earthenware jars. The wine is poised, well designed and with very precisely defined flavours. The result is intense, energetic and pure in a digestible style. Rating: 95-96 La Revue du Vin de France (May 2023)

84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot. 30 hl/ha. Cask sample. Deep crimson hue. Creamy and expressive with crème de cassis notes. Plenty of lift and freshness, the fruit juicy and tannins fine. Firmly structured all the same. Pinpoint for the vintage. (JL) 13.5% Drinking range: 2030 - 2045 Rating: 17+ James Lawther MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2023)

The quality of the tannins are pure velvet yet so, so fine in texture. Medium to full body with a weightless presence and beautiful heart. Château Durfort Vivens

The Durfort de Duras family came to Bordeaux in the 14th Century and laid the foundations of today's estate. They also, for a while, owned the near-by Château Lamothe (which went on to become Château Margaux). In 1824 the family sold to a Monsieur de Vivens who added his name to his new property. Under his ownership, Durfort-Vivens was awarded Second Growth status in 1855, a status it has often struggled to live up to. In 1937 the company that owned Château Margaux bought Durfort-Vivens and it was, once again, in common ownership with the villages grandest estate. Indeed, until 1961 when Durfort-Vivens was sold to Lucien Lurton, the wine from Château Durfort Vivens was made at Château Margaux.

The period of Lurton ownership has seen slow steady progress for Durfort-Vivens particularly since Lucien's son Gonzague took over and had a new chai built in the 1990s.

Gonzague decided to take the whole property into organic farming in 2012, and achieved certification in 2016. Following a biodynamic regime, the estate is also certified by Demeter.
