CHÂTEAU JEAN FAURE

2022 Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification Grand Cru Classé

This has a subtle hue that is certainly the least dark of wines from this vintage. Radiant freshness emerges from this 2022 whose blend is dominated by cabernet franc (64%). This has been managed with great delicacy, with nothing seeming forced or over-extracted. It epitomizes the finesse and invigorating energy that we look for in the best contemporary wines from Saint Emilion. Rating: 95-96 La Revue du Vin de France (May 2023)

Very fresh and bright with lovely energy and agility on the palate. Medium body. Fine tannins. Two-thirds cabernet franc. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Rating: 93-94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2023)

A blend of 64% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot and 6% old vine Malbec vinified with whole bunches, the 2022 Jean Faure wafts from the glass with characteristically complex aromas of rose petals, dark berries, plums, violets, vine smoke and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, it's suave and textural, with a layered core of fruit, powdery structuring tannins and a bright, mouthwatering finish. Rating: 93-95 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

Château Jean Faure

Château Jean Faure was bought by Olivier Decelle (who had already acquired the Maury, 'Mas Amiel' by then) in 2004. This ended a dark period in the property's history, since it had lost its position as a 'Grand Cru Classé' in 1985, thanks to bad management at the time. A long period of investment and restructuring followed. The vineyard oof 18 hectares, being partly on a similar gravel to its near neighbour Cheval Blanc, is composed of 56% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 6% Malbec. The property has now regained its 'classé' rank. The wine is aged for eighteen months, one third in concrete, and two thirds in barrels, 60% new, and 40% one year old.
