CHÂTEAU LA POINTE

2022 Pomerol

Grapes Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol

84% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc. 50% new oak. 14% alc. I love this La Pointe, not least because it is a bit of Pomerol outlier. The main difference between this wine and previous vintages is the tone of the core fruit. It is a darker, more brooding wine with a darker and more deeply-set palette of flavours. It is also pure, lively and blessed with fine-grained tannins, with exquisite control throughout. Not a big bruiser, nor a showy, oaky wine, but an elegant, indulgent, calm, bright and sensitive La Pointe, and it is my favourite vintage since the glorious 1945 and the outstanding 1961. La Pointe stands out from many of its neighbours by its clear wish to preserve the freshness of its fruit. Yet the substance is intense and perfectly ripe, with aromas of liquorice that grow as the wine lasts on the palate. The structure is svelte, lively and clearly defined in a sober style that remains dynamic. This 2022 clearly shows the path decided by the director Eric Monneret that was already in place with the very convincing 2020. This, the third largest estate in Pomerol, has found its new style. Rating: 92-94 La Revue du Vin de France (May 2023)

84% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample. Notably fragrant – almost floral. Not the most concentrated, nor the freshest, but a pretty wine with no rough edges. Just a slight suggestion of super-ripe fruit. And not that much tannin. Sightly messy finish. Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2023)

Lovely balance to this wine and you see polished tannins with ovaltine and hazelnut character. Medium body. Juicy. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Rating: 95-96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2023)
