A wine that gets my nod as this dynamic estate's finest to date is the 2022 Mangot, a medium to full-bodied, ample and layered wine evocative of cherries, dark berries, licorice and rose petals. Deep, concentrated and fleshy, with a vibrant core of fruit and a long, mouthwatering finish, this seamless, complete Saint-Émilion is sure to be one of the best purchases of the en primeur campaign. New Grand Cru. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Rating: 94-95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2023)
We are huge fans of Château Mangot and were delighted to find another fabulous effort in 2022. Classified this year as Grand Cru Classé - they are displaying all the grandeur and suave sophistication you would hope for. Impressive feel, lovely core of ripe and yet juicy dark berries, morello cherry flesh and a scent of dried petals too adds refinement. There is a good, chalky scrape of uber-fine-grained tannins. Clean, cool lines carry the delicious fruit load forward with great energy and finesse. This will unfurl nicely over the next 5-10 years.L&S (Apr 2023)
Quite a fresh, mineral and lively St.-Emilion that hooks me with garden herbs, brambleberries and an engaging twist of white pepper. Lots of wet stones and flowers as well. Very structured and compact, this has vibrating, chalky tannins and a broad, lengthy finish. Tight and dense, but freshness and balance are in check. Drink from 2027. Château Mangot
A single block of 37 hectares of vines on limestone clay soils run by the Todeschini family. The vineyard is planted with 75% Merlot, although this is tending to give way to Cabernet Franc in new plantings. 5% Cabernet Sauvignon completes the mix. Farming is organic, and the estate was awarded the Robert Parker 'Green Emblem' in 2023.
Élevage is in a mix of barrels, foudres and amphorae.
