CHÂTEAU NÉNIN

2022 Pomerol

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol

64% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Franc. 39% new oak. 14.28% alc. 33 hl/ha. 65 IPT. 3.69 pH. 7% press wine Harvested 1 – 23 September This is a much more concentrated wine than last year’s 2021, with a superb density of flavour and a darker hue than any Nénin I have seen. Alongside this decadent intensity of black fruit, there is still freshness and crunch, all balanced by invigorating tension throughout. Medium-weight and with admirable power, this is not a spicy wine but a bright, shining style with an almost minty fresh edge that brings in redcurrant top notes above the intensity of the core. Very few tannins are on display, so I anticipate this wine kicking off much earlier in its life than expected. Rating: 18.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2023)

A plush, well wrapped wine with plentiful substance and a silky texture. At the same time it has a vertical, almost strict profile. As to the aromas, black fruit is laced with graphite, additionally giving off fresher intonations of red fruit and flowers. There is a significative proportion of 36% cabernet franc and the velvety texture of the well-integrated, luxurious yet firm substance is quite admirable. This is impressive. Rating: 94-96 La Revue du Vin de France (May 2023)

64% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample. Deep crimson hue. Fresh and floral with just a hint of oak. Ripe core and smooth tannins with decent length on the finish. A touch warm but reasonable balance. Needs to knit. (JL) 14.3% Drinking range: 2028 - 2040 Rating: 16.5+ James Lawther MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2023)

A juicy and crunchy red with blackberry, chocolate, hazelnut. Mocha. Full to medium body with a creamy texture. Lots going on here. 64% merlot and 36% cabernet franc. Rating: 94-95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2023)

Château Nénin

Two things make Château Nenin standout from the rest of Pomerol – at 32ha it is considerably larger than most in in this crowded appellation; and Nenin has a real bona fide 19th Century château at its core rather than the more usual small shed. Infact it appears more along the lines of something one might find in the Haut-Médoc which is perhaps fitting as, since 1987, it has been in common ownership with Château Potensac and the great Saint Julien estate of Château Leoville Las Cases. As one might expect with such a noble stable-mate, quality has advanced rapidly in line with a lot of healthy investment in the estate. The vineyards are planted with 78% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon with an average age of around 30 years. The second wine is Fugue de Nenin.
