FELTON ROAD
2022 Macmuir Pinot Noir
Grapes | Pinot Noir |
Colour | Red |
Origin | New Zealand, South Island |
ABV | 14.5% |
Vineyard | MacMuir |
The 2022 Pinot Noir MacMuir is a little reductive from the start, which initially mutes the pure fruit, but it shakes that off to reveal a tender, mid-weight wine with round shoulders. However, the conclusion has a sense of uptightness, as if the entry is the base of a triangle and the finish is the tip, narrowing in shape - which is both the acidity and tannic tension. There is a slight hint of warmth from the alcohol (14.5%) on the finish that clips the red cherry and tea-leaf scented length. This is only the second vintage of the MacMuir, and the younger vines seem to produce more sugar at this stage compared with the older vines that make the other Pinot Noir cuvées. This is still a work in progress. Drinking range: 2025 - 2033 Rating: 89 Rebecca Gibb MW - Vinous.com (May 2024)

Lovely intense aromatics; morello cherry, plum, violets. Some dried thyme and sage. Tannins right there from the start, powdery and finely grained, contributing a bitter dark chocolate note. There is plenty of concentration underlying but this wine needs time to unfurl. Structured. Drinking range: 2027 - 2032 Rating: *** 93 Jane Skilton MW, Inside Burgundy (Dec 2023)
A rather smoky red on the nose with earthy, shiitake mushroom, lead pencil, dark cherry and strawberry aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and layered with lots of cloves and black pepper. Only the second bottling here. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Screw cap. Rating: 96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Oct 2023)
Felton Road
Felton Road and Rippon are undoubtedly the two leading vineyards in Central Otago, both making Pinots that are finely textured with fresh fruit flavours, rather than the 'fruit bombs' that so many others produce. Felton Road has been totally organic and biodynamic across their three Bannockburn vineyards since 2005. They have been certified by Demeter since 2009. After that there are more differences than similarities.
While Rippon, at Wanaka is on schist, Felton Road in Banockburn is on clay and calcareous loess. It is also very much in the rain shadow of the Main Divide. Irrigation is used at Rippon to help establish young vines, but dry farming is possible once the vines get their roots down, while at Felton Road permanent irrigation is required for the entire vineyard.
