Simply stunning, the 2022 Kratos is smoky yet also fruit focused, with musky dried apricots, lime zest, crushed rocks and sea spray forming its captivating bouquet. This is full of energy, soft-textured and packed with zesty citrus and mineral tones balanced by a core of vivid, ripe yellow apples. The 2021 finishes fresh and potent, ending with lemon oil and peach notes. It's amazing that this is Luigi Maffini's "entry-level Fiano". Drinking range: 2023 - 2028 Rating: 92+ Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Jun 2023)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

Another stunner from Luigi. This pure Fiano is the best expression of this lively, textured variety we have found. Perfumed and fresh with peach and apricot, wild flowers, touch of lime. Palate is zesty with lime juice, peach flesh A satisfying Mineral line, crisp acidity - but generous fruit extract. Gently perfumed and very satisfying.L&S (Mar 2023)

Certified organic. Tank-fermented, various vineyards harvested at different times. Bottled three weeks ago. Ripe herby citrus with a touch of pineapple richness to balance the fresh acidity. Fine-grained lees texture like fresh pears. Deep, full and perfectly balanced. GV (JH) 13.5% Drinking range: 2023 - 2027 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2023)

Luigi Maffini

Luigi Maffini's vineyards are on the coast of Campania, south of Naples, across the bay from Positano, and planted with the local grapes, Fiano for the whites and Aglianico for the reds. While the family's first vines were planted in the seventies, the real beginning of this winery dates from 1996.

Luigi and his wife Raffaella are both graduates of Naples university in agricultural sciences. Luigi specialised in viticulture and winemaking. Ten years elapsed between our first tasting of his wines and getting Luigi 'on board', but he has now been with L&S since 2009.

Raffaella and Luigi run the vineyards organically, and share the land with their two children and three dogs, as well as hares, foxes, hedgehogs, hawks and wild boar, with which they are happy to live in peace. There are now two vineyard sites, at Castellabate and Giungano, so some of the wines are DOC Cilento and some DOC Paestum.

A Dozen Italian Beauties by Matthew Jukes

We’re always thrilled to hear of others enjoying our wines. Following our Italian tasting earlier this year, wine critic Matthew Jukes (MoneyWeek, matthewjukes.com) singled out a dozen of his favourites, old and new, published on his website.

To make life easier, we’ve gathered together some from his selection into a handy mixed case, six different wines and 12 bottles for escaping to Italy this May.
