Le Macchiole is among Bolgheri’s old guard, founded in 1983 by Cinzia Merli and her late husband, Bolgheri native Eugenio Campolmi, and today run by Merli with her two sons. The Rosso is the estate’s only blended red, positioned as the purest expression of Bolgheri, drawing on Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from vineyards planted across the denomination between 1998 and 2020. The 2023 shows the vintage’s cooler side, opening with a delicate herbal-floral accord of linden, lilac and sage over wild raspberry and red mulberry fruit, all dry and withholding with undertones of oak moss and leaf litter, reflecting its maturation in 70% used barriques and 30% concrete. The palate has a glycerol-wrapped, almost jellied texture that holds the fruit at a distance, also leaning savoury with mushroom and underbrush notes. Tart lingonberry and goji berry fruit return on the finish, lifted by osmanthus florals, fresh acidity and graceful, almost feathery tannins. Drinking range: 2026 - 2041 Rating: 95 Sarah Heller MW, Club Oenologique (Oct 2025)

The 2023 Bolgheri Rosso is a very pretty wine. Crushed flowers, spice and mocha lift a core of red-toned fruit in this gentle, easygoing Rosso that shows the more refined side of Bolgheri. The refreshing style makes the 2023 Rosso a total delight. Drink it over the next handful of years. Drinking range: 2025 - 2030 Rating: 90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2025)

The 2022 Bolgheri Rosso is a soft, easygoing red to drink now and over the next few years. Sweet red cherry fruit, pipe tobacco, cedar and spice open nicely, giving this mid-weight Rosso plenty of charm. Soft contours wrap it all together in style. Drinking range: 2024 - 2030 Rating: 90 Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate (Dec 2024)

Le Macchiole

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
