NOVAL NACIONAL

2024 Quinta do Noval

EN PRIMEUR

Noval's 'Nacional' remains one of the rarest and most singular wines of the Douro. It represents just 0.65% of total production at Quinta do Noval. All thr fruit comes from a tiny parcel of old, ungrafted vines, Nacional is unique in the Douro - a field blend of around 30 different co-planted varieties that gives the wine its unmistakable identity. The grapes are all entirely foot-trodden in the Quinta’s traditional stone lagares. Production is minute, with only around 170 cases made, released exclusively in individual bottles. Winemaker Carlos Agrellos speaks of the wine’s tannic structure as something impossible to replicate elsewhere — a texture and rhythm entirely its own. Aromatically, the 2024 is extraordinary. Fresh citrus-edged 'bounce' jumps from the glass, layered with deeply perfumed floral notes of lilac and violet. On the palate, the wine feels almost electric in its energy, combining immense power with an astonishing sense of delicacy and transparency. Bright blue fruit runs through the core, while the structure remains incredibly fine, measured and poised. There is intensity here, but never heaviness — instead, the wine seems to glide across the palate with an almost spectral elegance that is both fascinating and totally delicious. Seriously impressive!L&S (May 2026)

After a sometimes decadent history, and the ravages of phylloxera, Quinta do Noval was bought by Port shipper António José da Silva in 1894, and his family owned and developed Noval for nearly the next 100 years. In the 1920's they introduced that ubiquitous piece of Port marketing - the stencilled bottle - and, with the 1954 vintage, the far more useful concept of Late Bottled Vintage Port. In 1925, they planted the iconic and, astoundingly, ungrafted Nacional vineyard, the 1931 of which is regarded as one of finest Ports ever produced. The mantle of running this great estate was passed, in 1993, to AXA Millésimes who own, among others, Châteaux Pichon Longueville and Suduiraut, and Christian Seely was put in charge of the renaissance of this great vineyard.

Wines bought en primeur are scheduled to arrive in the UK over the course of the next eighteen months. Lea & Sandeman offers duty paid and in bond storage through a dedicated storage company called Elephant Storage. While helpful, we do not require a firm commitment on delivery destination to process your primeur order at this stage. Our team will be in contact with you when your wines arrive in the UK to confirm the necessary delivery details.
