QUINTA DO NOVAL

2024

Origin Portugal, Port
District Vintage Port
ABV 20%

Since AXA acquired Quinta do Noval in 1993, the estate’s 100 hectares of vineyards have been meticulously restructured and elevated, giving the house the confidence to declare Vintage Port with unusual regularity rather than waiting for the traditional seven-year cycle. Even so, the 2024 release feels particularly special - a wine of striking individuality and finesse. The aromatics are captivating from the outset, leaning less on sheer fruit weight and more on extraordinary floral complexity and freshness. Notes of lilac and violet unfurl alongside an intense blood orange character that gives the wine an almost electric citrus energy. There is also a fascinating bittersweet note reminiscent of Chinotto, adding another layer of intrigue and sophistication. All the fruit is crushed in traditional stone lagares, half foot-trodden and half mechanically trodden. Winemaker Carlos Agrellos worked with ten separate 'lots' this year from the vineyard, each bringing complementary elements to the final blend and allowing for exceptional detail and balance. The result is a Vintage Port of remarkable purity, composure and aromatic lift — powerful yet incredibly refined. Representing just 7.6% of Noval’s total Port production, this is a really impressive release. L&S (May 2026)

Some dried fruit with violet and blackberry. The texture is particularly refined, complemented by sweetness and a brightness that holds the wine together. Grippy and precise on the finish, making this an elegant wine with strong definition. Rating: 96-97 Jacobo García Andrade, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2026)

Quinta do Noval

After a sometimes decadent history, and the ravages of phylloxera, Quinta do Noval was bought by Port shipper António José da Silva in 1894, and his family owned and developed Noval for nearly the next 100 years. In the 1920's they introduced that ubiquitous piece of Port marketing - the stencilled bottle - and, with the 1954 vintage, the far more useful concept of Late Bottled Vintage Port. In 1925, they planted the iconic and, astoundingly, ungrafted Nacional vineyard, the 1931 of which is regarded as one of finest Ports ever produced. The mantle of running this great estate was passed, in 1993, to AXA Millésimes who own, among others, Châteaux Pichon Longueville and Suduiraut, and Christian Seely was put in charge of the renaissance of this great vineyard.
