The 2025 Grand-Puy-Lacoste reveals a classic, refined bouquet of cassis, dark berries, cedar and lead pencil, with discreet floral nuances. Medium- to full-bodied, structured and precise, it’s built around a well-defined core of fruit framed by finely grained, youthful, filigreed tannins with a tensile profile. Less demonstrative than some of its peers in Pauillac, it privileges balance and typicity over sheer power, concluding with a long, elegant and mineral finish. Produced from a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, this is the first vintage vinified in the estate’s new gravity-fed cellar, enabling more precise parcel selection—an evolution that appears to reinforce the wine’s precision and coherence. Deep violets and heady blackcurrants on the nose, fresh though, inviting and crystalline – aromatically expressive. Supple and sapid with a real hands-off feeling. Approachable with a clean, clear grip to the fine tannins, mint, cool blueberries, graphite and wet stones. The terroir really shines in the glass. Feels very modern with mouthwatering acidity setting the tone – bright, lively and upfront. Delicious, crunchy and leaves a lasting impression with grip, tension, energy and focus. We had a super visit to Grand Puy Lacoste this year - tasting with Emeline Borie and Technical director Christelle Spinner. The 2026 a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot - is the first wine made in their beautiful new cellars. Its an absolute winner. Taking all the best elements of the vintage - the joy of a solar year, pitch perfect fruit ripeness and lovely concentration - allied with supple, silky tannins - and yet the superb freshness of a cooler year. Bright, elegant and just 13% of alcohol. It is a relatively small crop - in line with their neighbours. It captures Pauillac perfectly - with lovely blue and black berry fruit - a touch of earth and lovely spice and a whiff of dried herbs. Generous in depth and complexity yet measured and brightly light on its toes. They have done it again - this is an excellent release.L&S (May 2026)
The 2025 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is the first to be made in the new gravity-fed winery. It was picked between September 4 and 18 at 30 hl/ha, much lower than normal, with a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (76%). Matured in 65% new oak, it has a perfumed bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit, touches of graphite emerging with aeration, beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannins. Definitely one of the most refined GPLs that I have tasted at this stage, very harmonious, complex and engaging. Château Grand Puy Lacoste
Pauillac Cinquième Cru 1855.
If there's an estate that can rival Lynch Bages for the crown of most over-performing 5th Growth, it would be Grand-Puy-Lacoste.
The "Grand Puy" is the low gravelly hill on which the vineyards sit. In 1750 a portion were sold to Pierre Ducasse and became, obviously, Château Grand Puy Ducasse while the rest, after a couple of name changes owing to inheritance by daughters, became Château Grand Puy Lacoste.
The Borie family bought into Grand Puy Lacoste in 1978 and began quite a renaissance for the property.
Just a few kilometres from the town of Pauillac, the vineyards of Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste total roughly 36 hectares (90 acres) with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 75% of the total plantings and the rest belonging to Merlot (20%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). Typical of the region, the vineyard consists of a deep gravel top soil on a limestone base.
Production is about 12,000 cases of wine in an average year. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, and then the wines are placed into oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months of aging.
