Dark aromas on the nose, fragrant purple flowers, tobacco, cedar, liquorice and black cherries – smells quite medicinal. Round and so well textured – smooth and friendly, this has such a gorgeous dollop of red fruit on the mid palate, a tiny bit chalky which is so enjoyable with such fine, delicate tannins but it’s the energy that I really like too. So well constructed and balanced. Less ‘strong’ than in some years, this is friendly and compelling. A fabulous wine. Concentration at the end, with the liquorice, tobacco and wet stones. Really quite impressive. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.68pH. 65 IPT. Ageing 50% new oak. Harvest 8-20 September. Drinking range: 2033 - 2050 Rating: 95 Georgie Hindle - Decanter (Apr 2026)

We had a great tasting here with Christophe Congé - who seemed very much at home and confident the wines were in their groove after 3 years at the helm having arrived from Chateau Lafite. Immediately as you approach the glass - the Pedesclaux smells very smart. Very inviting a richness and a sophisticated charm, waving you in. Great gloss and flow to the mid-palate - but a good, serious edge too - real concentration here (more than 2015 says the Christophe). 2015 was too much ripeness and too late by contrast to 2025 he says - this year the fruit is better... he compares 2025 to 2010.. quite some accolade!)Great drive at the back of the palate, real energy and a gently tightening grip - but long fresh finish. Impressive.69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit VerdotL&S (May 2026)

Lots of purity, with freshness and a linear, evenly distributed dark fruit profile. There is elegance and a chewy texture that’s precise and focused, with good definition. Rating: 95-96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2026)

The 2025 Pédesclaux is powerful, rich and expansive, yet it retains striking finesse to temper all of the natural intensity of this warm, dry year. Pédesclaux certainly has a lot to offer. Lifted floral notes, silky contours and gorgeous blue/purplish fruit are some of the signatures that grace this expressive, generous Pauillac. Tasted two times. Drinking range: 2033 - 2045 Rating: 92-94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2026)

Château Pédesclaux

Fascinating visit here with the winemaker Catarina Freitas in 2012. Catarina showed us the map of the parcels which were owned by the property at the time that it was bought in 2009, and then two others, showing how, by purchases and swaps, they has vastly reduced the number of parcels and are consolidating the vineyard.

This was also where we first saw Alessandro Masnaghetti's maps of the area, which is a fascinating insight into where all these wines actually come from.

Catarina explained that as a result of the strength of the co-operative movement in Saint Estèphe and northern Pauillac, properties passed down though families often got split into tiny plots. The previous owner, in a rush to expand the surface area, bought what he could. Sometimes this was just a couple of rows of vines in the middle of someone else's vineyard. This made vineyard management harder, and also made it difficult to see clearly what they had at vinification - it was impossible to vinify every tiny bit separately.

Winemaking includes pre-fermentary cold maceration that can last up to an astonishing fifty days. Like properties such as Charmail, they tried using dry ice to cool the harvest so as to make sure the fermentation did not start, but from 2011 on they are using a new method, which I have not come across anywhere before, which is to hold the harvested grapes in a cold room at 3C for twenty-four hours before beginning the egrappage and final sortings and putting them into vats.

We were also shown the proposed new winery, which will use the natural slope of the built part of the property down to the Gironde. It will be built into the hill and use gravity thoughout to avoid pumping. Make no mistake, there intent is very serious here and its a name to look out for.
