100% Meunier from plots in Festigny and Le Breuil. South- and south-west-facing plots of 46-year-old vines in a single vineyard called Le Chemin Blanc, farmed along biodynamic principles (not certified) and according to lunar cycles. Hand-picked. Pneumatic press. Plot-by-plot vinification in stainless steel. No malo. Mostly 2016. Aged one year in oak barrels and four years sur lattes. Tirage in 2018. Disgorged January 2023. Dosage 0 g/l. This slightly mind-bending white wine smells and tastes of strawberries! Amazing red-berry fruit pinging out the glass. Cranberries. And nutmeg. Tastes like it should be a red wine. So lively and electric. Cranberry sherbet. Mouth-filling fruit with a wonderful sorrel, lime-green brightness and acidity, and something tingling and prickly and hot and cold, like Szechuan pepper. Dozens of angles and electric with brightness and prismic deliciousness. Great stuff! A wine full of exclamation marks and the joy of surprise. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 17.5 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2023)

The NV (2016) Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs ADN de Foudre Meunier is 100% Meunier vinified in oak, an approach that works so well here. Ample and creamy, with noteworthy finesse, this is exceptional. Pear, spice, dried herbs and coffee all build beautifully over time. This is classic Mignon at his best. Zero dosage. Disgorged: May 30, 2023. Drinking range: 2023 - 2032 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2023)

Winemaker's notes (Jan 2023)

Champagne Christophe Mignon

Christophe Mignon is a fifth generation vigneron working in the Marne valley on 6.5 hectares of vines between Le Breuil and Festigny, with his wife Laurence and Loann, one of their two sons. Although a small domaine there are still around 30 different plots helping to give complexity to the wines, which, apart from a small cuvée of Blanc de Blancs, are all pure Pinot Meunier.

Christophe believes in working alongside nature as he perceives it even if this turns out to be the harder way. Although not certified, his commitment to biodynamic, homeopathic and geobiological farming clear to see on any visit.

Having harvested the ripest fruit possible, the grapes are pressed quickly and fermented slowly, with no malolactic, nor filtration, and very limited SO2. The wines that result are very dry (he does some cuvées with no dosage) and rather dramatic, even quite extreme.
