Coates & Seely Brut Reserve NV Hampshire, England goes from strength to strength. It’s a pinot-based blend and carries a suggestion of fresh walnuts and cherries with a sappy energy and rapier acidity Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Nov 2019)

We've been huge fans of this great producer for years now. From the chalky slopes of north Hampshire - this is a classically shaped fizz that hits higher highs than so many. Good weight - but cut well with crisp firm fruit - lovely cox apple and some white berries too all delivered with finesse and bright energy. A great alternative to Champagne - with similar stylistic leanings - but brilliantly British. 50% Pinot Noir; 40% chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier L&S(Nov 2019)
Lovely nose, really bright and with soft yeasty notes. Full and creamy mouthfeel supported by zesty acidity and freshness – ripe green apples and subtle autolytic notes. Long, clean and refreshing. Drinking range: 2020 - 2025 Rating: 16.5 Alistair Cooper MW - www.JancisRobinson.com(Dec 2019)
Classy bubbles from the North Hampshire Downs with a lovely biscuit richness, grapefruit notes and tangy apple flavours. Delicious with smoked salmon.Jane Parkinson - Stylist Magazine(Jun 2017)
Coates & Seely
Coates and Seely is the brainchild of Christian Seely and Nicholas Coates. The pair spent a year scouring Southern England for the ideal place to make excellent sparkling wine. In 2008 they found the Wooldings, tucked away in a secluded valley near Whitchurch, on the chalk downlands of Hampshire. “Near Winchester. Actually it’s closer to Basingstoke but Winchester sounds more romantic” says Seely jovially.
The vineyards now total 24 hectares, and are planted with the Champagne varieties Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. They refurbished the original buildings, importing first-class winery equipment for winemaker Ryan Carter. Unlike most UK sparkling wine producers Coates & Seely are concentrating on Non Vintage wines - The Rosé was the first release; Blanc de Blancs then followed and in July 2015 their first vintage wines were released the Perfide Blanc de Blanc & Perfide Rosé 2009. All the wines carry the terms Méthode Britannique, and Britagne (pronounced Brit~an~ye) on the label, a testament to the quality and individuality of sparkling wines here that will at least rival their French neighbours!
Much is made of the strata of chalk soil that hosts the vineyards of Champagne, that runs under northern France and the Channel to re-emerge in Kent and Sussex as the Downs, and many of England’s vineyards cling to that very chalk soil. But, crucially, we have the climate, on the very margins of where grapes can be persuaded to ripen, to produce the tart base wines that are ideal for high quality sparkling wine production. All that, the classic grape varieties and much expertise and even more enthusiasm has propelled England to the forefront of the sparkling wine world. In this case we've got wines from five different estates, all with something to say on the subject, and the case includes a couple of cheeky rosés because we do it so well.
