Salmon pink in colour and beautifully aromatic (cranberries, strawberries and a touch of brioche) this is immediately appealing. The palate shows mid-weight red berry fruit and a lovely sherbet acidity which keeps the wine fresh and long in the mouth. Very impressive given that it comes from the Hampshire Downs and rivals many of its counterparts from over the channel. L&S (Jul 2011)

Made from 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier this exquisite wine has stealthily become one of the most elegant and rewarding of all English sparkling rosés. With a couple of years on lees and six months minimum in the bottle, coupled with a dash of reserve wine to add a smidgen of depth, this is not a weighty, dark style but a Tinkerbell, casting tiny magical spells on your taste buds. It is discreet, silky, rosehip and cranberry-kissed, pervasive and yet not forceful or bullying, allowing its charms to seep into your senses effortlessly and infect your mood with unavoidable composure and a growing sense of delight.Matthew Jukes (Oct 2022)

One of my favourite English sparkling rosés is Langham Wine Estate Rosé Brut NV. It has a glorious smell of fresh raspberries and wild strawberries, and misses out on a wine of the week slot only because it was there quite recently.Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Oct 2022)

I recommend Coates & Seely Rosé Brut NV English Sparkling wine which is made in Hampshire and goes very well with hot-smoked salmon with crème fraiche on crispbreadsVictoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Dec 2021)

Coates & Seely

Coates and Seely is the brainchild of Christian Seely and Nicholas Coates. The pair spent a year scouring Southern England for the ideal place to make excellent sparkling wine. In 2008 they found the Wooldings, tucked away in a secluded valley near Whitchurch, on the chalk downlands of Hampshire. “Near Winchester. Actually it’s closer to Basingstoke but Winchester sounds more romantic” says Seely jovially.

The vineyards now total 24 hectares, and are planted with the Champagne varieties Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. They refurbished the original buildings, importing first-class winery equipment for winemaker Ryan Carter. Unlike most UK sparkling wine producers Coates & Seely are concentrating on Non Vintage wines - The Rosé was the first release; Blanc de Blancs then followed and in July 2015 their first vintage wines were released the Perfide Blanc de Blanc & Perfide Rosé 2009. All the wines carry the terms Méthode Britannique, and Britagne (pronounced Brit~an~ye) on the label, a testament to the quality and individuality of sparkling wines here that will at least rival their French neighbours!
