Blanc de Blancs Brut Grand Cru Chouilly R & L Legras
From the Grand Cru vineyards of Chouilly, this entirely Chardonnay champagne has pale colour, smooth weight and fresh flavour, with remarkable clean length and a zesty finish. A really exciting quality Champagne which (still) deserves a wider audience.

Ask for champagne in a Michelin-starred restaurant in Paris and you are more than likely to be offered a glass from the producer Legras. The grower’s wines are made from chardonnay from the vineyards of Chouilly. This is lean and taut, with a bracing, dry finish. Top 25 Wines for Autumn, September 2017. Will Lyons, The Sunday Times (Sep 2017)
This Cuvée reveals brilliant lemon colour tints with a fine effervescence. Our Non Vintage Brut Champagne is noted for being much lighter than other Champagnes. It is fresh and fine, a perfect aperitif wine. Its nose has citrus lemon and grapefruit aromas. In the mouth, it reveals a taste of fresh fruit combined with the vivacity of Chardonnay grape and a final note of English candy. Winemaker's notes
100% Chardonnay. This small house is now making over 150,000 bottles per annum, and converted from grower to négociant in 1972. Owns 6 ha of vineyards and buys in most of the fruit. Base 2009. Aged three years on lees. Dosage 6 g/l. Lifted with putty notes. Light and fresh and dancing. Piercing but not painful acidity. Crystalline. From one of our favourite growers, R&L Legras, a simply superb-value all-Chardonnay Champagne from the Grand Cru vineyards of Chouilly that offers lumious crystal-clear acidity, fine creamy mousse, incisive fresh lemon and a touch of brioche in a super-elegant style. Rating: 93 www.thewinegang.com (Jan 2016)
For finesse and delicacy, and super-precise profiled length, I thoroughly recommend Legras Blanc de Blancs - my tasting note ends, somewhat unscientifically, 'this is so good!'. Harry Eyres (Aug 2015)
Fine, taut and citrussy with lovely bright lemony fruit and a subtle toastiness. Very pure with lovely precision and a beautiful elegance. Youthful but already complex. Rating: 93 Jamie Goode, www.wineanorak.com (Aug 2015)
An amazing price for such a classy Champagne. Made entirely from Chardonnay and showing the soft, appealing style of Chouilly on the Cotes des Blancs. Serena Sutcliffe MW
Very fine with quite a developed nose. Relatively mellow for a Blanc de Blancs, but very easy to drink in quantity. Has a certain nuttiness. Long. VGV 12% Rating: 17/20 Jancis Robinson MW OBE - www.JancisRobinson.com
Bold, savoury, mineral nose. A broad savoury style with good autolytic notes and impressive length, quite high acidity. Up to 15 years. Rating: 15 points Decanter Magazine
René and Lucien Legras founded their Champagne house in the Thirties, and the family business still sources its grapes from the important Côtes des Blancs Grand Cru village of Chouilly. It is the perfect bubbly... with its ripe, elegant lemon scent, creamy mousse and zesty finish. Jane MacQuitty, The Times
R & L Legras
One of our earliest champagne grower signings the fabulous Legras family make supremely elegant Champagnes based on the top class Chardonnays from the village of Chouilly, at the start of the Côte des Blancs, just outside Épernay. All their wines are 'Blanc de Blancs' - with no Pinot Noir or Pinot Meunier. (Except the rosé,of course!). Well known and highly respected in France it is used by a surprising number of Parisian restaurants as 'house' champagne, including the Tour d'Argent.
With every man and his wife on the lookout for Champagne 'deals', it is sad that so many people overlook the best 'deals' of all - high quality, grower-made Champagnes, packed with character, and at prices significantly below any of the best prices you might find for Grande Marque Champagnes.
