TIO PEPE FINO 2022 RELEASE

En Rama Gonzalez Byass

Grapes Palomino
Origin Spain, Sherry
ABV 15%

Bottled on 23rd March this year, this epic En Rama won this year’s taste-off against La Gitana’s Manzanilla version by the slimmest of margins. While La Gitana is typically lusty and involving, Tio Pepe’s Fino En Rama is slightly more lifted, a touch fresher and more cleansing on the finish.
This is the 13th edition of this unfiltered and unfined Tio Pepe En Rama in the UK, and it was selected from 96 barrels from the Tio Pepe solera. Antonio Flores, the master blender at González Byass, noted that this year’s saca, or selection for bottling, “was clearly influenced by the weather during the growing season. A very mild and extremely dry winter meant that the flor was very active during the colder months.” Flor is the covering of yeast that protects sherries from oxidation, giving them their unique yeasty, salty character. The annual spring selection takes place when the flor is at its thickest, giving the unfiltered and unfined wines their distinctive flavours.
My advice is to get in quick to secure your stock of this fantastic style of sherry. Always incredible value for money, I understand that magnums have been bottled, too, which would be epic for summer gatherings. I have yet to track these down on the internet, but they will be sure to pop up any minute. Tthese must be the most seasonal and finest value wine purchases of the moment!

This is the 13th annual issue of the cult limited release ‘en rama’ (‘from the branch’) Tio Pepe fino produced from ‘biologically’ aged wine drawn off the cask when the film of oxygen-loving ‘flor’ – the strange white bread-like protective frothy carpet of Jerez yeast, which isolates the sherry from the air – is at its most abundant. One for aficionados who thirst for a palate-cleansing, flavoursome, minimally filtered fino that tastes more natural, pure, saline, fresh and as close to that in the producer’s cask in spring. Think apple skin, hay, grilled almonds, fresh sourdough, yeast, salt and lemon peel, plus a soupçon of Marmite. Try it with Esqueixada, Gazpacho/Salmorejo or a bowl of green olives. Serve cool (10°C) rather than well-chilled. Immensely characterful.James Viner, Times of Tunbridge Wells (Jul 2022)

Pale yellow with golden glints. Slightly cloudy as it contains flor in suspension, reflecting its having been bottled “En Rama”. Complex on the nose, very sharp, with a strong aroma of the layer of flor, together with chalk, almonds, lemon, withered flowers, salt and minerals.< Concentrated, slightly creamy, salty and full of flavour. It delivers an impressive finish, rounded and balanced, with notes of iodine, toasted almonds, aldehydes and dried flowers. Thee aftertaste is rounded and alluring, clearly harking back to its origins in the albariza soil yet also reflecting the significance of its biological ageing. This wine is the purest definition of the vines and the winery. The intensity of Tío Pepe en Rama 2022 and its rich flavours mean it is essentially a wine to be enjoyed with food, an ideal match for fish, seafood, vegetables, cured meats, spicy dishes and all sorts of rice dishes. Serve well chilled in a white wine glass.Winemaker's notes (Apr 2022)

Gonzalez Byass

In 1835, a young man called Manuel María González Angel arrived in Jerez, intent on making a name for himself in the thriving and lucrative sherry business. Encouraged by the consistent growth in exports, that same year he purchased a small winery and began to produce and export his own wines. This was the start of Bodegas Tío Pepe which, due to the firm’s increasing success, became the González Byass company soon afterwards. Today, Bodegas Tío Pepe is known around the world as one of the leading producers of sherry and Brandy de Jerez.
