GEVREY CHAMBERTIN

2017 1er Cru Perrières Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py

EN PRIMEUR

(from a .08 ha parcel; vinified with 50% whole cluster). Once again the aromatic profile is cool and restrained with its mix of essence of red currant, plum and plenty of earth and floral influences. The intense, delineated and muscular medium weight flavors exhibit good minerality on the linear, saline, dusty and firm finale. Again, this doesn’t’ possess its usual density but it’s nonetheless very well balanced and should age effortlessly. Drinking range: 2032 - Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2019)

From a parcel of 65-year-old vines and vinified with 50% whole cluster, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Perrière unfurls in the glass with aromas of licorice, sweet cherries, cassis and charcoal. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with lots of fine, chalky structure lurking behind a generous core of succulent fruit. This is another wine built for the long haul. Rating: 91 - 93+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrières 1er Cru comes from a parcel of 70-year old vines and there is just one new 350-litre barrel to go around this year. It has an intense bouquet with brambly red fruit, hints of leather and hickory, Moroccan spice emerging with continued aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, grippy in the mouth with a fig and blackberry finish that leaves a light pepperiness on the aftertaste. Drinking range: 2023 - 2035 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

Initial impression is sweet vanilla and spice from the oak. Really spicy fruit too. The oak is covering the fruit at the moment but it’s there at the core and opens up to a gently floral character. Chewy, firm tannins but not angular. Big and rich. Freshness on the finish. Drinking range: 2025 - 2037 Rating: 16.5++ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2018)

There's just one 350-litre barrel of this wine for the world, sourced from a premier cru that sits just below Mazis-Bas on fine sand and limestone soils. Old-vine concentration, deep colour and textured, fine-grained tannins are framed by skilfully integrated wood and aromatic spices. Superb winemaking. Drinking range: 2025 - 2032 Rating: 96 Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
