MAZIS CHAMBERTIN

2018 Grand Cru Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py

EN PRIMEUR

90 year old vines. Amazing terroir. This is a beast and really quite full-on for now. It needs time - will only get finer and more sophisticated with time. Nose is a riot of brambly dark fruit, violets and earth. Palate is dark and serious. There is an incredible gloss to the fruit. Dark and polished. Black cherry. Firm and beautifully structured this is incredible. Dense compact and loaded with tightly wound dark fruit. Loads of energy and bright peps and an extra-fine-grained tannic build with mineral coolness. L&S (Nov 2019)

(from .25 ha parcel of 60+ year old vines planted at a density of 14,000/ha in Mazis-Bas – vinified with 90% stems). A restrained, fresh and beautifully layered nose displays notes of herbal tea to the red cherry liqueur, earth, violet and Asian-style tea. The sleekly muscular and agreeably intense imposingly-scaled flavors also brim with dry extract that helps to buffer the exceptionally firm tannic spine on the powerful, balanced and strikingly long finish. This is a huge Mazis that is breathtakingly good. Drinking range: 2040 - Rating: 93-96 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2020)

Reserved and introverted, the 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru reveals incredible potential, but it will demand patience. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark wild berries, peonies and orange rind, complemented by deep-pitched savory nuances of smoked meats, forest floor and spices, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with searing levels of concentration, lively acids and a long, resonant finish. Always the slowest to develop of the domaine's wines, readers purchasing the Mazis should plan on two decades of deferred gratification before opening bottles. It was vinified with 90% whole clusters and matured in only 75% new oak, attaining 13% natural alcohol in this vintage of elevated maturities. Rating: 95-97+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from three parcels, the largest populated by 90-year-old vines and planted at high density. Raised in 75% new oak and 90% whole bunch, it has a stupendous, mineral-driven, intense bouquet of blackberry and blueberry fruit that delivers great clarity and panache. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, vibrant acidity, great intensity and a precise, sustained finish. It is very tightly coiled at present and as such, it will demand several years (at least) in bottle before it will even consider its drinking plateau. Drinking range: 2026 - 2050 Rating: 96-98 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2020)

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
