2019 Rouge 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Domaine Joseph Drouhin
Close to Pommard. This is a big step up from the Greves, with a much more silky flow. Fruit is dark and more lacy too. Pretty and elegant feel. Sleek fruit in the middle has nice depth, with pretty dots of ripe red deep fruit adding a bit of energy. Finishes with the memory of sweet cassis lozenges. Sophisticated feel but very easy to enjoy.
Veronique says this was her Grandfather’s favourite Beaune, for elegance, in the '40s. 7 HA vineyard. Quite a lot of Whole Bunch this year.L&S (Nov 2020)

A really concentrated but very graceful Beaune 1er Cru. Very subtle nose of red fruit with nice floral notes and discreet spicy oak. Glides over the palate, the fine tannins already beautifully integrated. Very long, silky finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. A slightly riper array is comprised by liqueur-like notes of plum, dark cherry and a plethora of floral elements. The medium weight flavors are quite rich yet also relatively fine with solid delineation that carries over to the balanced and lingering finish. The 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches (Domaine) is deep and complete, unfurling in the glass with aromas of plums, cherries, dark chocolate, warm spices and petals. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's sumptuous and vibrant, with powdery structuring tannins, bright acids and a broad, expansive finish. The 2019 Beaune Clos des Mouches 1er Cru (Rouge) contains 30% whole cluster. Dark berry fruit commingles with wet clay and light minty aromas. The palate is well balanced with a silky texture, a little "fatter" than the Beaune Grèves, with hints of licorice toward the persistent and very saline finish. Big and broad on the nose with heady, flattering, ‘sweet’ perfume. Lovely freshness and juiciness too. Clos des Mouches is always meant to be delicate. Lovely polish and very easy to like. 30% whole bunch vinification, with just the best fruit selected, the remainder being declassified into the Côte de Beaune bottling. Mid purple, not the deepest, yet the nose is heady and exciting, properly ripe grapes, but in balance. Quite striking, indeed interestingly powerful, with lovely length of aftertaste. Domaine Joseph Drouhin
Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and still family owned, are one of the most well-respected names in Burgundy, especially through their flagship wine, the iconic Clos des Mouches.
A huge part of the Drouhin production comes from their own domaine fruit (78 hectares), and much of the rest comes from contracts such as that with the Marquis de Laguiche, who shook hands with the grandfather of the current generation, agreeing to let him manage his vineyards which included an important part of Le Montrachet; this collaboration endures. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm
Small refinements continue to be made here. The presses have been changed - a reversion to basket pressing for the reds, and for whites the presses are open - along with a number of other growers they are following the trend to think that slight oxidation of the juice before fermentation is not a problem and may add complexity as well as avoiding later problems of premature oxidation in bottle.
For the reds there has been the introduction of selective whole-bunch fermentation in the Côte de Nuits wines. The house style remains one that 'emphasises the natural elegance of great Burgundies' as they describe it. The domaine is all cultivated with an organic and biodynamic approach.
