CHAMBERTIN

2019 Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot

EN PRIMEUR

Again, very rich and sleek. Lots of volume, but takes its time to reveal, but slowly the richness evolves to distinct opulence, every molecule filled with flavour intensity. Not yet as distinct as the Mazoyères, but it is majestic and powerful. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045L&S (Oct 2020)

(from purchased grapes that Perrot has the right to intercede with certain aspects of the viticulture). An exuberantly fresh if markedly restrained nose offers up a panoply of spice, earth and game elements that add breadth to the mostly dark berry fruit aromas. The tautly muscular and imposingly scaled flavors possess outstanding mid-palate density as well as evident minerality on the focused, youthfully austere and hugely persistent finale that is shaped by dense but fine-grained tannins. I very much like the balance and like the Mazoyères, the lovely sense of harmony. Drinking range: 2034 - Rating: 93-96 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru was a touch reduced out of the glass, opening to reveal aromas of smoked meats, plums, orange rind and spices. Full-bodied and broad-shouldered but appropriately reserved, it's a deep, textural wine of considerable authority, so I look forward to revisiting it in bottle. Rating: 93 - 95+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

Rich purple, dark plump fruit with a certain nobility. Stands up to be counted, very voluminous, not the most elegant example of Chambertin that I know but packs a punch and has an exceptionally long finish, at which point the elegance does start to emerge. The tannins show too, “you can almost count them”, says Christophe. Love the aftertaste. Tasted: November 2020 4/5 stars Rating: 96-98 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

Pierre Damoy grows the fruit and Perrot-Minot decides when to pick. Cask sample. Very juicy and sweet and full of life. Just a bit denser and with more back story than the Bourgogne rouge but definitely of the same school. More Perrot-Minot than Chambertin at the moment but on the finish it grows and grows, with a particularly rich undertow. Drinking range: 2028 - 2050 Rating: 18+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru boasts enthralling precision and detail on the nose with exuberant black cherry and wild strawberry fruit, a fine sense of mineralité and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very harmonious and expansive in the mouth with a very spicy finish thanks to a liberal sprinkling of cracked black pepper. What a lovely Chambertin! Drinking range: 2025 - 2055 Rating: 95-97 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Christophe Perrot-Minot is now the fourth generation of his family producing wine on the estate after his great grandfather Amédée Merme devoted himself to the management and production of wine over 130 years ago. The estate has gone from strength to strength – always keeping the highest standards. Integrated viticulture has been practiced for many years now which has been adapted especially for the terroir. No herbicide or chemical fertilizer is used, instead, Christophe prefers to “stand back and listen to this terroir, only intervening when necessary or when the weather requires it, never systematically.” This is one of the star domaines of the whole of Burgundy.
