CHARMES CHAMBERTIN

2019 Aux Charmes Grand Cru Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs

EN PRIMEUR

Right at the top of Charmes, under the border with Latricières. 70% whole bunch. This rich and deep, but what really impresses is how it lengthens out - pretty seriously long and pure. 100% new wood, with Thibault's signature 'white toast'. Drinking range: 2025 - 2038L&S (Oct 2020)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

Very deep and dark. A heady, perhaps quite alcoholic bouquet, with dark raspberries, and some stems infusing the fruit in a good way. A touch of oak, excellent vibrancy and good structure. Darker fruit than most of the Charmes flight but retaining zest. Some find it a bit artificial but I suspect it is more a question of youth. Drink from 2028-2038. Tasted: September 2023. Drinking range: 2028 - 2038 Rating: *** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Nov 2023)

(from Charmes proper; 70% whole cluster but without the central stem). An appealingly layered nose reflects notes of lavender and violet along with earthy and fresh red currant aromas that are trimmed in subtle but not invisible wood influence. This is also quite generously proportioned with fine mid-palate concentration to the medium weight flavors that exude a discreet minerality on the powerful and well-balanced finish. This very firmly structured effort needs to develop more depth but as it is going to require extended cellaring, there is a very good chance it will do just that. Drinking range: 2034 - Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

100% new wood, 70% whole bunch, but with the top of the stalks removed. Dense purple, almost black in the centre. Heady, uncompromising, dark fruit. Startling in its style, and I think it works. The dark plum and raspberry fruit has a little dusting of chocolate, but stays light on its feet. Tasted: November 2020 **** Rating: 94 - 96 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Aux Charmes Grand Cru includes 70% whole bunch with the main trunk of the stem removed (a technique pioneered by Lalou Bize-Leroy.) Clean and precise on the nose, offering black cherries and touches of crushed strawberry and bergamot; the 100% new oak is nicely integrated here. The palate is well balanced with a gentle grip on the entry, and quite savory toward the finish, but this displays good length and is very promising. Drinking range: 2024 - 2048 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

The lack of the word 'domaine' in the name signals that this is a négociant wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. On the whole Thibault buys grapes having tended the vines with his own team, so that the wines are domaine wines in all but name.

Wines bought en primeur are scheduled to arrive in the UK over the course of the next eighteen months. If you do not wish to take home delivery, you may wish to consider where you would like the wines shipped on arrival in the UK. Lea & Sandeman offers duty paid and in bond storage through a dedicated storage company called Elephant Storage. For more details on the terms and fees associated with storage please go to our Storage Homepage or contact our primeurs team for more information.

While helpful, we do not require a firm commitment on delivery destination to process your primeur order at this stage. Our team will be in contact with you when your wines arrive in the UK to confirm the necessary delivery details.
