CORTON CHARLEMAGNE

2019 Grand Cru Henri Boillot

EN PRIMEUR

Aromatically the fruit is very reserved, allowing the oakiness to show rather more, but there's huge concentration coming up behind, allied to a tightly-strung tension. Extraordinary power and length. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035L&S (Oct 2020)

Here too the nose is quasi-Chablis like with similar nuances of iodine, mineral reduction and oyster shell along with a variety of citrus influences. The sleek and almost painfully intense broad-shouldered flavors flash plenty of minerality on the dense, muscular and bone-dry finale that leaves zero doubt that this will need extended patience if you’re to see it at its peak. This youthfully austere effort has length to burn and it’s not every day that you encounter a Corton-Charlemagne that can go head to head with a great Chevalier but this one can. Drinking range: 2036 - Rating: 96 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2021)

The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, one of Boillot’s strongest wines, has a delightful bouquet with well-defined scents of dried honey, hazelnut and crushed rock, quite Meursault-like in style. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity, not amazingly complex overall, yet I admire its tension and length, with quite a persistent spicy aftertaste. Very fine. Drinking range: 2023 - 2035 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2021)

Produced from purchased grapes, the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is serious and structured, enforcing a change of pace after the series of Puligny-Montrachet grands crus. Mingling notes of pear and citrus oil with hints of toasted bread, white flowers and praline, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and chalky, with palpable structuring dry extract and tangy balancing acids. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 95 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

Cask sample. Greenish deep straw colour. Substance but not much character on the nose right now. Masses of edgy acidity but little grace for the moment. A bit of alcohol… You'd have to take quite a lot on trust to buy this. It's very much rather blocky building blocks at present. Chewy finish with some heat. Drinking range: 2026 - 2035 Rating: 16++ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2021)

The Corton-Charlemagne is supplied in grapes from the Ladoix and Pernand-Vergelesses sectors. Pale lemon and lime, with a striking nose, more reductive than toasty. The fruit is explosive on the second half of the palate, really standing out, a near perfect expression of Corton minerality and offering exceptional length. Tasted: October 2020 **** Rating: 95-98 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Oct 2020)

Henri Boillot complements his domaine wines with a small range of négociant wines of superb quality in very limited quantities. A few of the whites are offered here - an opportunity to buy some of Burgundy's rarest appellations from a top source.
