GRIOTTE CHAMBERTIN

2019 Grand Cru Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot

EN PRIMEUR

Only ever bottled in magnum as the production is so small. Christophe describes it as having crystalline finesse and believes this is best presented with age - and magnums are better for that - 'masterful concentration but very, very fine'). Sweet fruit and spice nose with lovely depth. Round initially, and very Gevrey; dark fruit and sleek too - a gorgeous hedonistic cherry mouthful, which just tightens on the tannins on the finish. It is, as Christophe says, 'very fine'. Drinking range: 2028 - 2045L&S (Oct 2020)

A somber but agreeably fresh nose consists primarily of red and dark cherry, plum, violet and a whiff of underbrush. The super-sleek and gorgeously intense medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality on the muscular, tightly coiled and sneaky long finish. I very much like the balance of fruit, acid and tannin components and this is a Griotte of finesse and refinement. Drinking range: 2031 - Rating: 92-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

One of the harder-to-read wines in the cellar during my visit was the 2019 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru. Unracked, it was reserved and introverted on the palate—despite its already rather inviting nose of cherries, peonies, espresso roast and raw coca. I look forward to revisiting it in bottle. Rating: 92-94 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

A small cuvée (two barrels) from purchased grapes, though Christophe can decide on the date of picking. This wine is only offered in magnums. Lively deep crimson, with a little savoury element, all in discretion, the whole bunch shows up behind, though the fruit is attractively ripe, and the finish is very long, this is certainly not a blockbuster. Tasted: November 2020 4/5 stars Rating: 94-97 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

Cask sample. Bright crimson. Edgy, even cheesy. Lots of energy, and gas, here. Tannins extremely fine. Clean – very clean – and zesty. Health juice! Drinking range: 2027 - 2047 Rating: 18 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Griottes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru, which comes from purchased fruit, has an intense nose that is very linear at the moment. Whereas this Grand Cru often displays blue fruit in its youth, this is black fruit and slightly more tertiary. The palate is well defined with crisp acidity on the entry. Silky in texture there are notes of blood orange and marmalade towards the finish with just a light tang of white pepper on the aftertaste. This is a bit of a charmer. Drinking range: 2025 - 2050 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Christophe Perrot-Minot is now the fourth generation of his family producing wine on the estate after his great grandfather Amédée Merme devoted himself to the management and production of wine over 130 years ago. The estate has gone from strength to strength – always keeping the highest standards. Integrated viticulture has been practiced for many years now which has been adapted especially for the terroir. No herbicide or chemical fertilizer is used, instead, Christophe prefers to “stand back and listen to this terroir, only intervening when necessary or when the weather requires it, never systematically.” This is one of the star domaines of the whole of Burgundy.
