LE MONTRACHET

2019 Marquis de Laguiche Grand Cru Joseph Drouhin

EN PRIMEUR

(Cask Sample) This is deeply enticing on the nose. Intense and weighty perfume jumps from the glass. On the palate you're bowled over by fabulous power and fine line of real energy at its heart. Buzzing citrus feel runs throughout. Eats up the oak - no sign of it here. Really alive and fresh with great cut and vim. Totally delicious.
30-40% New Oak Light Toast. Worked it since 1947. They have 2 HA. Just above Chevalier and next to Les Demoiselles. Some currently out of production. Go everyday for a week and take it slow harvesting here. A real mix of clones and rootstocks.

So ripe, but also deep and delicate, this is a masterpiece of creamy sensuality, the considerable power and concentration underplayed, with the result that it has noble elegance. Yes, there is a hint of exotic fruit in the nose, but also minty freshness. The finish is very long and intense, but so finely nuanced. Drink or hold. Rating: 99 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jul 2021)

(from a 2.06 ha parcel on the Puligny side). An overtly floral yet restrained nose reflects additional notes of lemon zest, white peach and apple compote. There is outstanding volume to the concentrated and powerful large-scaled flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also serves to buffer the citrus-tinged acidity shaping the hugely long finish. The Drouhin Montrachet is usually a wine of finesse and understatement though in 2019 it is more muscular and imposing and altogether impressive. Drinking range: 2031 - Rating: 94-97 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2021)

The 2019 Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche Grand Cru is very promising, wafting from the glass with aromas of orange zest, honeyed pears, white flowers, citrus blossom and toasted almonds. Full-bodied, concentrated and enveloping, it's rich and layered, with huge depth at the core and a long, saline finish. Rating: 94-96 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru (Marquis de Laguiche) is very intense on the nose, featuring subtle licorice scents tucked behind the citrus fruit; this seems to expand with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with a playful entry of apricot and quince. It builds beautifully in the mouth, revealing hints of crème brûlée and almond shavings toward the well-defined finish. Hints of chai tea and grilled hazelnut swirl around on the aftertaste. This is a long-term Montrachet. Drinking range: 2024 - 2050 Rating: 95-97 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Pale green and yellow. Here the nose is very backward. So much still to come. One can read the shape and potential of the wine without being able to see the detail. There is a sensual deep yellow fruit, a sense of power thrilling the palate, even some warmth, before a superbly persistent finish. This will make a really fine Montrachet, without losing sight of the richer style of the year, we just cannot pick out all the nuances yet. Tasted: December 2020 **** Rating: 95-97 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Dec 2020)

Despite the size of their vineyard holding, not all Drouhin's wines come from their own domaine, but most of the other wines do come from long-term contracts, such as exists with the Marquis de Laguiche wines. In all but name these wines are 'Domaine' wines, and the vineyards are cared for and the wines vinified with exactly the same care.
