MAZOYÈRES CHAMBERTIN

2019 Grand Cru Domaine Dugat-Py

EN PRIMEUR

70% whole bunch. A sense of firm authority in the brooding depths of the black fruit. Much tighter and more mineral the the Charmes, with a taut black core in which the fruit is closed down or shut out and it's all about the mineral - finishing with a bracing freshness not doubt contributed to by the amount of whole bunches. Drinking range: 2035 - 2050L&S (Oct 2020)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

Firm reduction dominates the underlying fruit at present. By contrast, there is lovely verve and freshness to the quite sleek and relatively racy broad-shouldered flavors that possess excellent definition on the appealingly textured and exceptionally persistent finish. This very firm and intensely mineral-driven effort needs to develop more depth, but the material appears to be present for that to occur. Drinking range: 2039 - Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

Aromas of plums, exotic spices, rich soil tones, smoked meats, orange rind and peonies introduce the 2019 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated wine built around a deep core of concentrated fruit, lively acids and elegantly chalky tannins. It's more sapid and mineral than the more fruit-driven, gourmand Charmes, though both are similarly dynamic this year. Rating: 94-96 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

A bit tighter, even slightly reduced, than the Charmes. And then so broad, smooth and, actually, charming on the palate. Savoury. Just what great red burgundy is about. Drinking range: 2027 - 2047 Rating: 18.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru, blended with 70% whole bunch and 50% new oak, was pretty reduced on the nose when I tasted it from barrel. So, bypassing the aromatics, the palate is medium-bodied with chunky, forthright tannins. This is much more masculine than the Charmes-Chambertin, touches of melted tar and tobacco appearing toward the finish, which feels a little conservative by comparison. Hopefully it will develop more charm by the time it is bottled. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
