MOREY SAINT DENIS

2019 1er Cru Charmes Domaine Lignier-Michelot

EN PRIMEUR

80% whole bunch. Rich, with a lively red fruit top note, it's bright, the acidity lively, and it firms the tannins a little, giving a very vertical expression and a sensational long taut juicy finish. 'One of the best I've ever made in Charmes', remarks Virgile 'all fine and elegant - a vintage which really fills the mouth too'. Drinking range: 2028 - 2040L&S (Oct 2020)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

(from 50+ year old vines; 70% whole cluster). A more elegant and cooler blend is comprised of red and blue pinot fruit, earth and a pretty plethora of floral elements. There is both good verve and delineation to the delicious middle weight flavors that are a combination of finesse and refinement while displaying fine length on the reasonably well-balanced finale as the only nit is a hint of warmth. Lovely. Drinking range: 2031 - Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

Right next door to Aux Cheusots but totally different. 80% whole bunch. Fine deep purple. The fruit has a perfectly judged ripeness, fuller than Cheseaux, with the same fresh acidity behind, a touch of bandaid, good depth and length. Tasted: November 2020 4/5stars Rating: 92-94 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Aux Charmes 1er Cru has a ripe and fleshy kirsch and blood orange bouquet that completely disguises its 75% whole bunches. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy and opulent, though the finish displays admirable tension with a lovely white pepper and ginger tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. As its name implies - charming. Drinking range: 2023 - 2038 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.

The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
