MOREY SAINT DENIS

2019 Vieilles Vignes Domaine Lignier-Michelot

EN PRIMEUR

80% whole bunch. Very rich fruit, super concentration of cassis and blackberry. Density and structure of old vines here, finishes with tannic grip, still with lots of fruit concentration. Drinking range: 2025 - 2033L&S (Oct 2020)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

(from a blend of Très Girard, Les Cognées and Chenevery; 80% whole cluster). This too is quite aromatically pretty with its ripe and fresh array of floral, spice and black currant that is laced with warm earth hints. There is excellent volume to the caressing yet powerful and concentrated medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a robust, serious and youthfully austere finale that offers even better depth and persistence. Excellent and recommended though note well that this is firmly structured for a Morey villages, so patience required. Drinking range: 2031 - Rating: 89-92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

80% whole bunch. From Très Girard, Les Cognées and Chenevery. Rich deep purple with a much more concentrated fruit on the nose, lifted a little by the whole bunches. Plump dark fruit, spicy notes, fills the mouth out, slightly darker fruit than En la Rue de Vergy and will take a little longer. Firm tannins. Tasted: November 2020 4/5 stars Rating: 91-93 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes contains 80% whole bunches. It has an opulent bouquet that is more towards the heady style, touches of dates and fig filtering through the black fruit but still fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red berry fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf, opening up nicely on the finish that cruises along with a sprinkling of white pepper and cumin. Good potential, so long as the aromatics do not become any more extravagant. Drinking range: 2023 - 2036 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.

The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
