SAINT AUBIN

2019 1er Cru Frionnes Domaine Hubert Lamy

EN PRIMEUR

Frionnes is on a sort of calcareous scree with bits of Kimmeridgian clay. Intense and mineral, this has a very attractive sweet citrus juiciness. Spine-tingling. Keep it if you can, this will age beautifully. Drinking range: 2024 - 2036L&S (Nov 2021)

The 2019 Saint-Aubin Les Frionnes 1er Cru embraces subtle tropical notes on the nose, where hints of nectarine and apricot intertwine with fine mineralité. The palate is well balanced with sour lemon and lime on the entry, spicy and quite persistent, and very harmonious on the finish. There is a lot going on here, and it is perhaps Lamy's wine that will have the widest appeal. Drinking range: 2022 - 2038 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

Very pale colour. A little fresh apple but suggesting something riper beneath. Excellent intensity then softer fruit with ripe citrus, quite long. Rating: *** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Oct 2021)

This is also exuberantly fresh with its even cooler nose of grapefruit, Granny Smith apples and overtly floral aromas. There is equally good intensity to the wonderfully textured medium weight flavors that flash good minerality on the driving finish that is also bone-dry. Lovely stuff though at least some patience is suggested. Drinking range: 2026 - Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2021)

Elegant, resonant, super-long and amazingly suave, this is a classic Lamy wine and in 2019 there is an extra degree of drama in this wine. Rating: 18+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Frionnes is showing especially well, unfurling in the glass with hints of citrus pith, white flowers, crisp green apple and mandarin. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, it's saline and penetrating, with a bright spine of acidity. This will be well worth seeking out. Rating: 91 - 93+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

Cask sample. Real wild flowers and biodynamic quality on the nose. Distinctive without any sweetness. Very pure and distinctive. A good bet for ageing. Drinking range: 2024 - 2031 Rating: 16.5+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Saint-Aubin Les Frionnes 1er Cru has a very taut, Puligny-like nose with wet limestone and flinty aromas accompanying the Granny Smith apples. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, superb salinity with a vibrant, animated finish that feels reassuringly persistent. Pure class. Drinking range: 2023 - 2040 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

A little more colour here, pale yellow with a cool chiselled white fruit note. I like the way this fills the mouth with a fruit, which is just at optimum ripeness, which means it has developed a perfume of roses and peach blossom, but the core of the fruit remains white, with excellent texture and no excess heat. Tasted: October 2020 **** Rating: 90-93 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Oct 2020)

Olivier Lamy has built on the solid foundations his father Hubert prepared with twenty years and more of work in the vineyards. Today the Domaine has 18.5 hectares of vines - 80% are Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. The vines are in several appellations - Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay, as well as the excellent Bourgogne Blanc. The reputation of the domaine is now made, but the Saint Aubins, both red and white, remain some of the bargains of Côte d'Or, and challenge the supposed superiority of the grander village names on a regular basis, both in terms of young and mature wines.

Olivier's wine-making style and preference is to emphasise the fresh and the mineral side of his wines, and there is very little new wood in this cellar, with many wines with no new wood at all, and that is with the wines in 600 litre demi-muids rather that the classic Burgundy (225 litre) fût. Certainly Oliver's whites do have an arrow-like purity and intensity, and seem to age completely straight and true.

The reds are worth more than a casual mention too. Olivier has been getting some consultation help from Sylvain Pataille, and the wines have energy and bounce along with the supple tannins and ripeness.
