2019 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

80% is from just in front of their cellars. Champ Goudins, Croix Blanche, Chalandins and Pré de le Folie. Rich weave of fruit flavours, textural tannins and acidity, Amazing precision, a crunchy cut to the fruit, it is delicate and yet not at all under-powered. Very scented - just lovely. Drinking range: 2028 - 2038L&S (Oct 2020)

This is an exotically perfumed Vosne and the nose makes you dive in immediately to experience the fabulous fruit flavours in this wine. With epic balance, flesh and stunning precision, this is a top-class 2019. Rating: 18+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jan 2021)

(from 5 different parcels located in La Columbière, Champs Goudins and Le Pré de la Folie, which are contiguous vineyards located below the village and above the Route Nationale). Discreet but not invisible wood sets off spicy purple fruit aromas that display a top note of violet. The equally round, succulent and caressing medium-bodied flavors possess better depth and notably better length on the sappy and balanced finale. This seductive if mildly austere effort should drink reasonably well on the younger side but repay up to a decade of cellaring. Drinking range: 2026 - Rating: 89-91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

Mingling notes of cassis, cherries and berries with hints of rose petals, raw coca and spices, the 2019 Vosne-Romanée Village is medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with fine concentration, lively acids and rich, powdery tannins. Long and sapid, this cuvée is a perennial favorite of mine. As in 2018, it's a blend of lieux-dits Les Chalendins, Le Pré de la Folie, Les Champs Gourdin and Les Croix Blanches. Rating: 90-92 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

The blend of all sectors: young vines from Pré de la Folie, a touch of Colombière, Pré-Goudin, 10% from Chalandins, and 20% of Croix Blanche, to make 28 hl/ha overall at 14.2%. Clear deep bright purple. Powerful heady stuff, shows its Vosne-Romanée heady character but with a toasty and powerful finish. Tasted: November 2020 4/5 Rating: 90-92 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

Cask sample. Bright crimson – not that dense. Bitter-cherry note with some energy and freshness – and distinctly marked chewiness on the end. Appetising. But notably more youthful than many 2019s. Drinking range: 2025 - 2034 Rating: 16+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Village comes from all the domaine’s parcels except for La Colombière. This has a fragrant bouquet of rose-petal-tinged dark berry fruit; the 40% new oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. A little pinched at the moment, but it will flesh out with aeration. Fine. Drinking range: 2022 - 2029 Rating: 86-88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
