BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
2020 Podere Giodo di Carlo Ferrini
Rainy June, dry July with temperatures up to 36 °C, stormy August with high temperatures. Presumably they were glad of their Leroy-like vine training/plaiting, known as accapannare in Italian and practised from 2009. The Simmonit team has been advising them from 2023. Deep crimson with almost bitter fruit. Lovely and fresh and already superb for current drinking! Very well-mannered and satin-textured.

Giodo's 2020 Brunello is pure class. Silky and fresh, it's a lifted and aromatic expression which combines sapid, succulent cherries and a touch of wild scrub with an energetic streak of salinity. Long and fresh, it's just so refined and balanced. Gorgeous. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 96 James Button, Decanter (Feb 2025)
From vintner Carlo Ferrini, the Giodo 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a balanced, medium-plus intensity wine that delivers excellent focus and sharpness. You get the generosity and softness of the vintage with Mediterranean tones of lavender and rosemary that frame a pretty core of cherry and blackcurrant. You also get a savory note of something that reminds me of fragrant tea leaf. The tannins are expertly managed, and the wine's texture builds steadily in the mouth. It shows superb phenolic ripeness with no sharp edges. The finish is fleshed out, contemporary and generous. Production is 16,000 bottles. Drinking range: 2026 - 2043 Rating: 96 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Nov 2024)
Carlo Ferrini and his daughter, Bianca completed harvest within the first 10 days of September with the estate’s brand-new vinification facility ready just in time. This is a laudable follow up to Giodo’s charismatic 2019 – and just as gorgeously expressive. A panoply of strawberry, arbutus berry, cardamom and porcini greets the nose. Precise and succulent, the palate is laden with lush apricot. Polished and intricately knit tannins are harmoniously embedded, giving effortless support, and all those captivating aromas and flavours resonate on the lingering finish. Drinking range: 2025 - 2037 Rating: 97 Michaela Morris, Decanter (Nov 2024)
A more elegant than powerful Brunello here. Intensity and depth to this wine, with a fresh profile of strawberries, red cherries and peonies. A cinnamon note adds a touch of grace. The attack is graceful as well, with velvety tannins, medium to full body, persistent and refreshing acidity and a long, very flavorful finish. Elegant sample. Drinkable now, but it will last for decades with ease. Drinking range: 2024 - Rating: 97 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator (Sept 2024)
Podere Giodo di Carlo Ferrini
'Eleganza, eleganza, eleganza' is the mantra of the famed oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Since the first vintage in 2009, this estate has fast become something of a cult classic, immediately amongst the established top Montalcino producers.
Carlo's stellar career started with fifteen years researching Sangiovese clones for the Chianti Classico Consorzio and subsequently he has consulted at some of the greatest estates in Italy. In 2009 he finally put down some roots of his own, putting his full effort and expertise, his heart and soul - into his own winery in Montalcino. Named after his parents 'Giovanna and Donatello' - Giodo is small, just 5.5 Hectares - but perfectly formed.
Carlo spent many years looking for the best spot for his own venture. Just south of the town of Montalcino he found the site for Giodo. South-east facing, gentle slopes in small parcels surrounded by forest, perfectly exposed to the morning and early afternoon sun, and looking out towards Monte Amiata. He planted fifteen different clones of Sangiovese, all chosen for their quality of fruit and their low yields, using his earlier experience to select the very best for this site.
The winery itself, it should come as no surprise, is a minimalist work of art and the culmination of Carlo's experience in designing the perfect tool for the job for his clients over the years. It was finished just in time to make the 2019 vintage. The gravity-fed vat room has both stainless steel and concrete vats, and the barrel cellar has a variety of amphorae as well as multiple sizes of barrels.
