CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY

2020 Domaine Christian Clerget

EN PRIMEUR

With 11 parcels of vines in the village, Justine decided to make two cuvées from 2019. This is the assemblage of all except the 'aux Croix'. Bright and very silky - very Chambolle, fresh and floral, fresh fruit in a linear arc across the palate, again with a dark berry character. There's quite a lot of clay - a heavy soil. Like the Morey there is a lovely way the fruit returns with more expressiveness on the finish. Drinking range: 2025 - 2038L&S (Nov 2021)

There is a bit more aromatic complexity to the aromas of plum, dark currant, newly turned earth and a whisper of wood. There is better size, weight and mid-palate density to the punchy medium weight flavors that are supported by slightly firmer tannins on the lingering finale. This should be approachable after 5-ish plus years. Drinking range: 2026 - Rating: 89-91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

Full purple. Not that much nose, suggestive of a thick textured wine. Interesting how elegant this becomes in the mouth, with a significant depth of predominantly dark red fruit. Peppery at the finish but fully encompassed by the fine sweet dark fruit which extends beautifully. 30-40% whole bunch. Tasted: December 2021 Rating: 90-92 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

A domaine of 6 hectares, with 8 appellations, run by Christian, Isabelle and their daughter Justine Clerget from their house in the northern end of the little village of Vougeot, which is really in the commune of Chambolle. They have been organic (certified) since 2017, Justine having insisted on it when she joined them, but it sounds as though she was pushing at an open door, because Christian is entirely committed to this approach and clearly believes that good wine starts with the vines.

At harvest the grapes are picked into small cases for the short trip to the winery which really is right in the middle of their holdings. They adapt to the vintage conditions, so that they did 2 pigeages in total in 2019, whereas in 2017, they did one a day throughout the fermentation. In 2018 they did some whole bunch fermentation, but reverted to their normal complete destemming in 2019. At the end of the alcoholic fermentation Christian decants into tank, allows the wine to settle for ten days, then puts the wines into barrel where they stay without racking until bottling. They are using about 30% new wood on the villages and 40% on the Chambolle Charmes and the Échézeaux, and the wines say in barrel for a long élevage of 18-20 months.

Wines bought en primeur are scheduled to arrive in the UK over the course of the next eighteen months. If you do not wish to take home delivery, you may wish to consider where you would like the wines shipped on arrival in the UK. Lea & Sandeman offers duty paid and in bond storage through a dedicated storage company called Elephant Storage. For more details on the terms and fees associated with storage please go to our Storage Homepage or contact our primeurs team for more information.

While helpful, we do not require a firm commitment on delivery destination to process your primeur order at this stage. Our team will be in contact with you when your wines arrive in the UK to confirm the necessary delivery details.
