SAFFREDI
2021 Le Pupille
The 2021 Saffredi is one of the most vivid, profoundly beautiful wines I have ever tasted from Elisabetta Geppetti. Dark, layered and resonant, the 2021 offers tons of depth and yet remains wonderfully light on its feet. There is a level of finesse here I have never seen before in Saffredi. Blackberry, espresso, lavender, new leather and incense build over time, but it is the wine’s total sense of harmony that leaves me speechless. The 2021 is not a powerhouse—not an obvious wine. For those who can give this time in the glass, it’s a total stunner. Drinking range: 2029 - 2041 Rating: 98 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Dec 2025)

There is a ripe black fruit puree sweetness to the Cabernet that places you in Tuscany, and a purity to the cassis and mint that is striking - many Bordeaux Cabernets don't have this purity of fruit. A great vintage, of course extremely young but delicious, with sinewy tannins, lashings of spiced rosemary, liqourice root and oyster shell salinity. 70% new oak for ageing. Saffredi was 100% Cabernet Sauvignon until 1990 (grafted onto an old Sangiovese plot), and continues to amaze even with the addition of Merlot and Petit Verdot. Right up there at the top of what a Bordeaux blend can do on the Tuscan coast. Amazing from owner Elisabetta Geppetti. Drinking range: 2026 - 2042 Rating: 97 Jane Anson, Decanter (Dec 2024)
This pure, intense red is infused with black currant, blackberry, blueberry and violet aromas and flavors, accented by graphite and wild herbs. Very tightly wound, racy even, with bracing acidity and refined tannins, this classy red leans more to the elegant side, with terrific harmony and length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2027 through 2045. 3,750 cases made, 1,400 cases imported.—B.S. Drinking range: 2027 - 2045 Rating: 97 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Aug 2024)
Mesmerizing aromas of sandalwood, lavender, sage and currants. Mint and spearmint. Lead pencil shavings. Light coffee bean too. Medium to full body with ultra-fine tannins. It goes on for minutes. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, and 10% petit verdot. So approachable already, but this will age beautifully. Best after 2026 and beyond. Drinking range: 2026 - Rating: 99 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Nov 2023)
Le Pupille
Le Pupille is located in the Maremma, in the South of Tuscany and the estate covers 75 hectares under the DOCG of Morellino di Scansano. Considered as the appellation's leading property, the estate produces eight wines with its most famous wine, Saffredi, launched in 1987 by owner Elisabetta Gepetti and consultant winemaker Giacomo Tachis. Elisabetta's belief in the quality of the vineyards of the Maremma and her determination to bring them to a wider audience has been instrumental in the emergence of both Morellino di Scansano as an appellation - with elevation to DOCG as recently as 2006 - and Le Pupille as an internationally-acclaimed winery.
