98 point Rothschild wine for £125 per 6-pack IB? O Caro Mio!

by David Porter

We have long been fans of the very impressive wines from the Lafite Rothschild family made in collaboration with the Catena family in Argentina – the name CARO comes from the two families – CAtena and ROthschild. This wine may well represent their best release to date.

2012 CARO, Barons de Rothschild/Catena, Mendoza

“Incredible aromas of spice, cedar, walnut and dark berry. Floral too. Spectacular nose. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a racy and refined finish. Fresh and succulent. Made from old vines of Malbec in Compuertas and Cabernet Sauvignon from Altamira. Such finesse. Half the normal production. The best wine ever from the Domaine Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and Nicolas Catena winery.” 98 points, James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com

Bodegas Caro

Started in 1993, Caro is a joint venture between Catena and Domaines Baron de Rothschild. Christian le Sommer (ex Château Latour) is in charge of the winemaking. This is South American wine in a revolutionary style that is altogether more appetising than the norm; characterised by top quality Malbec from excellent terroir, which is given further elegance and complexity through blending with Cabernet Sauvignon. The combination produces a voluptuous, refined wine with a harmonious balance between the wine’s Argentine identity and its Bordeaux style.
