Ex-chateau bottle tasted blind in Sauternes. The Rieussec ‘03 has a strong Barsac like aromas – marmalade, quince, vanilla and coconut aromas that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe candied, orange peel and dried mango entry. The oak, always a little more prominent at this address, is nicely integrated and the acidity well-judged, although it does not fan out as I was hoping it would on the finish. This is a fine Rieussec, albeit not in the same class as other vintages. Drink now-2024. Tasted April 2013. Drinking range: 2013 - 2024 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2017)

Medium yellow-gold. Reticent but pure aromas of fruit salad, spices and vanilla, lifted by floral and mineral nuances. Wonderfully honeyed, fat fruit flavors are complemented by cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. The sexy oak treatment gives lift to the wine. A bit youthfully aggressive but very long on the back end, showing vanillin oak and a bit of warmth. But this one offers superb potential. Rating: 92-95 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2005)

‘Nose: a tight kernel of fresh, concentrated fruit, oranges and lemons. Taste: tightly coiled, concentrated ripe, candied fruit and a touch of honey - the sheer beauty of the wine stopped me in my tracks at this stage of the tasting! A great wine.’ David Peppercorn www.Decanter.comwww.decanter.com

Château Rieussec

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 For several generations, Château Rieussec has been a leading name in Sauternes wines. As early as 1868, Charles Cocks remarked that “Beyond any of the others, Rieussec produces wines that are very similar to Yquem wines”. The modern history of Rieussec, and the beginning of a remarkable rennaissance, starts with the purchase of the estate by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984. A new winery was completed in 1989 and yields restricted to maximise quality. There are 92ha of vineyard, planted with 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle. Fermentation takes place in barrels from DBR's own cooperage. Aging is 18 to 26 months depending on the year, including 55% in new barrels.
