I came to Coutet, which has its usual burnished white gold brightness of aspect, expecting the usual super-clean nose, but got instead a funky nose like an underground mushroom cellar - not cork-taint but fresh, growing mushrooms. This was so disconcerting that I found the wine, which otherwise seemed to have all the richness one might expect of it, impossible to mark. Rating: ? L&S (Apr 2006)

We offer free nationwide delivery on all orders over £150 (excluding Highlands & Islands). Express Delivery options also available. The 2005 Coutet has a perfumed and well-defined nose with orange rind, marmalade, barley sugar and light wild honey scents. The palate is fresh on the entry and very focused, with crisp acidity and a bright, tensile, very pure finish. Excellent. Tasted at the 2005 Sauternes horizontal held at Château Coutet. Drinking range: 2025 - 2050 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2025)
The 2005 Coutet is very refined on the nose with delineated yellow plum, tangerine and honeysuckle scents. Chamomile and saffron aromas surface with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with viscous honeyed fruit, laced with orange peel and quince, perhaps with just a little abruptness on the finish when you wish it would hang around longer. Very fine, though, and I can see a long life ahead. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate. Drinking range: 2021 - 2042 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2024)
Bright golden yellow. Cool, pungent nose offers hints of orange, marzipan, sexy brown spices, parsley, grass and eucalpytus. Sweet, thick and powerful but with its fat fruit flavors cut by strong acidity. At once densely packed and vibrant, finishing with superb lingering sweetness and a mineral element. This needs patience and should evolve slowly. Rating: 91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2008)
Château Coutet
Barsac Premier Cru 1855 A square tower indicates the origins of Château Coutet as a 13th Century fortification. Indeed the château is a mixture of various styles added at various times in its long history. At the turn of the 19th Century, Château Coutet came into the possession of the Lur-Saluces family, owners of Château d'Yquem, and they owned it until 1923. Since 1977, Coutet has been owned by the Baly family, represented today by brothers Dominique and Philippe. Château Coutet is one of the two Premier Cru properties in Barsac (the other being Château Climens). There are 38.5ha of vineyard, given over 75% Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Wines are fermented in wood (50% new) and aged for up to 18 months.
