Two samples of this, and I have a feeling the first, which showed an element of overripe fruit, was simply oxidised, since on the palate it was much tighter than the nose suggested, compact and bright and long with good plush depth, and the second had a nose to match the palate, much purer and more on clean ripe fruit. This has a fine blackberry, cedar-infused nose with good definition – tightly coiled and certainly needing more time. Very good concentration, fine tannins, quite succulent for a Saint Estephe but very well poised with fine sense of mineralité on the finish. Imbued with femininity, which is unusual. Good depth and cohesion. This remains an excellent Lafon-Rochet although its still needs time. Drink 2015-2025. Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2009)

Good red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of musky currant , black raspberry, camphor and tobacco leaf. Round and plump for St. Estephe, with noteworthy volume and seamless texture; sweeter by far than the chateau's 2007 or 2006 samples but possesses harmonious framing acidity. Finishes with broad tannins that arrive late. A big success. Rating: 91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2008)

Good saturated ruby-red. Black raspberry, cassis and sexy spices on the nose. Dense, supple and sweet, with ripe dark fruit, black olive, earth and deep spice flavors. Conveys an impression of power and authority, not to mention classic St. Estephe character. The long, rising finish features substantial ripe tannins buffered by the wine's strong material. A highly successful vintage for this chateau. (May/June 2007) Rating: 90-92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2007)

Château Lafon-Rochet

Saint Estèphe Quatrième cru 1855 A somewhat complicated history eventually placed the Rochet vineyard - so named due to its rocky soil - into the hands of the Lafon family in the early years of the 17th Century. The family owned the estate until 1895. It passed through several hands until Guy Tesseron, who's family had prospered in the Cognac business, bought the, now run-down, estate in the 1960's. Guy completely renovated Lafon-Rochet, even to the extent of demolishing all of the delapidated buildings and rebuilding a grand 18th Century style chateau, which was painted yellow to match the labels. Thus Lafon-Rochet are almost unique among Haut-Médoc châteaux in being built in the 20th Century. In the 1960's Château Lafon-Rochet's vineyards consisted of just 15ha of Merlot. Today, there are 41ha under vine, and at a more Médoc-like 54% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Grand Vin spends up to 20 months in wood (50% ish new). Sitting inland from Cos d'Estournel, facing across the Jalle de Brieul at Duhart Milon and Lafite, Lafon-Rochet has some very noble neighbours. The Tesseron family also own Château Pontet-Canet.
