The 2006 vintage was not the easiest in the vineyard. June and July was very hot and August, very wet (three months worth of rain fell in 15 days). The sun returned for harvest making picking relatively straightforward. Unusually in 2006, it was the red grapes providing the freshness and the Chardonnay adding the body. A bouquet of chocolate, baked apple and biscuit rises from the glass. On the palate the juice is wholesome and generous. There is a vein of fresh acidity that provides focus and poise. Autolytic flavours reflect the warm summer. Wine Maker Eric Lebel describes this as 'generous, round, ample and elegant'. If 2004 was 'luminous' then the 2006 is definitely 'opulent'. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 L&S (Oct 2019)

The 2006 Vintage is a rich, opulent Champagne. Passion fruit, apricot, tangerine peel and spice all show the signs of a warm, radiant year. All the elements are so well balanced. The 2006 is an especially opulent Krug endowed with fabulous balance and tons of class. Warm weather during the summer yielded an extroverted Champagne that is already quite delicious. There was some disease pressure in August, but favorable weather in September helped stave that off. The rich, dense style of the 2006 stands in sharp contrast to the 2004 and 2008 in this tasting. Disgorged: Spring 2019. Krug ID: 219022. Drinking range: 2026 - 2046 Rating: 97 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2024)
The 2006 Krug had a tough job following the 1988 Collection, but it performed well. It has an airy nose at first, then reveals citrus peel, apple tart and a slight metallic note that fortunately dissipates with aeration, eventually becoming quite floral. The palate is very harmonious, sylph-like in texture, and quite penetrating, with a surprisingly honeyed, extremely persistent finish. This will mature into a fabulous Krug. Drinking range: 2024 - 2050 Rating: 96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2022)
The 2006 Krug Vintage is fabulous. Here the richness, breadth and texture of Pinot come through loud and clear in a Champagne that is classic Krug. Red plum, coffee, spice, baked apple tart and lemon confit all flesh out effortlessly in the glass. The ripeness of the year is evident, and yet the vibrancy of the Chardonnay lends so much energy. The 2006 can be enjoyed today, but also has the balance and stuffing to develop well for many years to come. This is a superb showing from the 2006. This is Krug ID: 118014. Drinking range: 2021 - 2041 Rating: 97 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Sept 2020)
Krug
The grandest of the Grande Marques. Johann-Joseph Krug, who was born in Mainz, founded Champagne Krug in 1843, having previously worked at Jacquesson and marrying Adolphe Jacquesson's sister-in-law. The Company is still controlled by the Krug family - Olivier Krug being the current incumbent - although ownership was sold to LVMH in 1999. Krug are the only House to barrel ferment all their wines - in "de-seasoned" 205 litre casks of Argonne oak. The rich Krug style also comes from prolonged lees ageing and the very high proportion of reserve wines in the blend.
