CHÂTEAU RAYNE VIGNEAU

2007 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé

The Rayne-Vigneau 2007 seems initially unsettled by the performance of the 2006, on first acquaintance more closed and taciturn. Leaving it to one side, over the following 15 minutes it flowers and offers very attractive scents of white peach, apricot and lemon curd. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity. It is a little compact and unresponsive toward the finish, but there is certainly impressive focus. It is just a Sauternes wine that needs to say more, so I suggest another two or three years in the cellar because there is immense potential. Drinking range: 2015 - 2025 Rating: 95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2013)

Light gold. Floral nose. Good weight and an edge of lime. Manages to be racy as well as heavyweight. Still quite chewy. Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2009)

Palish yellow-gold color. Subdued but pure aromas of white peach and flowers. Juicy, fresh and nicely balanced; in a rather gentle style despite possessing lively acidity. Not a thick style, and youthfully unevolved today, but finishes with very good length and sneaky flavor intensity. Rating: 89-92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2008)

Château Rayne Vigneau

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 The owners of the estate in the 17th Century (a Gabriel de Vigneau appears on deeds as far back as 1635) were the de Vigneau family. In 1834, the estate was purchased by Catherine Marie de Rayne. On her death, Château Vigneau passed to her brother and it was his son Albert de Pontac who attached his aunt's name to the estate. Today, Château Rayne Vigneau is owned by CA Grand Crus (a subsidiary of Crédit Agricole) who also own Grand-Puy-Ducasse in Pauillac and Meyney in Saint Estèphe. The 80ha vineyard overlooks the River Ciron, and is composed of 74% Semillon, 24% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. The wines are fermented in wood and aged for up to 18 months.
