CHÂTEAU CLINET

2008 Pomerol

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol
ABV 13.9%

Amazing glass-coating colour depth, and good cassis coulis and oak nose. Palate rather oak-dominated and there is a drying quality to it on the finish. Slightly depends whether this is a sample from a new barrel, which will only be a percentage of the whole, or if this representative. Possibly a bit over-cooked Rating: 89+? L&S (Apr 2009)

The 2008 Clinet has a deep garnet colour. This has plenty of fruit on the nose with ample blackberry, cranberry and fresh mint; very well defined and quite opulent in the context of the growing season. The palate is fresh on the entry with fine tannin, layers of blackberry and bilberry fruit laced with crushed stone; fresh and lively with a hint of peppermint towards the finish and graphite (courtesy of the Cabernet) on the aftertaste. This is drinking very well now although it has another 15 years of drinking enjoyment to give. Drinking range: 2018 - 2033 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2018)

Good deep ruby-red. Exotic Pomerol scents of dark chocolate and violet complemented by sexy oak tones. Lush and large-scaled; a bit youthfully undifferentiated today, but the flavors of cherry-cola, cassis and licorice are compellingly creamy and sweet. Finishes with serious, broad, supple tannins and very good length. Rating: 91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2011)

Another resounding success for the vintage, the opaque purple-colored 2008 Clinet (14.4% alcohol) is composed of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Yields of 38 hectoliters per hectare, while higher than in 2010, were still modest. Another powerful, big, large-scaled effort, the 2008 exhibits an inky/purple color as well as sweet creme de cassis, blackberry, plum, Asian spice, licorice and incense notes. Layered and full-bodied with stunning purity and a 40+ second finish, this beauty needs 3-5 years of bottle age and should keep for 25-30 years. Drinking range: 2011 - 2041 Rating: 94 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (May 2011)

Château Clinet

Château Clinet lies at the heart of Pomerol on a bed of Günz gravel. Now owned by Jean-Louis Laborde who, in 2003, appointed his 23 year old son as Estate Managing Director. Improvements implemented by the previous owners, the Audy family, have been strengthened by the Labordes and they continue to employ the services of Michel Rolland. Only 9ha of vineyard, planted with 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, with vines at 40 years old. Grapes are hand-harvested, and the wines aged in 60% new wood barriques, with the balanced being just one year old.
