The 2009 Chasse-Spleen has a simple, earthy bouquet, a little dustiness at first although that soon dissipates with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly soft tannin on the entry, moderate depth, well-judged acidity with a sandalwood and tobacco infused finish that has a spring in its step. A very fine for Chasse-Spleen, although not my personal favourite vintage. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Drinking range: 2020 - 2040 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2019)

The black cherry on the nose is quite firm but behind it is some sweeter cassis. Ripe fruit dark chocolate and coffee beans fill out the mid palate the fleshy suppleness helped by ripe tannins. 2020-40 Rating: 92 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)

Bright, moderately saturated red-ruby. Raspberry and licorice aromas and flavors are lifted by a violet topnote. Juicy and nicely ripe, with harmonious acidity energizing this medium-bodied wine. Finishes with firm tannins, a note of fresh herbs and good length, turning a bit dry as it opened in the glass. Rating: 88 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2012)

Château Chasse Spleen

Remarkable Chasse-Spleen has always produced high quality wines, which, for the last thirty years, have been worthy of a Third Growth Grand Cru. The English translation of the name of this Cru Bourgeois property is ‘chasing the blues away’, making it one of the most poetic of all names in the Médoc. Owned by Claire Villars, Chasse-Spleen is the leading estate of the little known Moulis appellation, and the wines are of excellent quality. Taking a look around the property (and if you are lucky, being guided round by Jean Pierre Foubet, Claire’s highly entertaining husband) gives you a good idea why they are so well admired. A large estate, although not all plots are next to the château itself; the cellars are impeccably clean, and there is a beautiful tasting room overlooking the barrel cellar and vines.
