So pure. Complete absence of the old slightly feral character of Gruaud. Total purity, real juice and flow, volume from the concentration of cassis and blackberry leaf and blackberry ripe fruit. Really most impressive. Very focused, so that there is a touch of mint as well as the blackberry leaf, real precision. Full-blooded, rich and terrifically long. Best Gruaud I have tasted en primeur. Rating: 93+ L&S (Apr 2011)

This has plenty of fleshy tannins and depth through the mid palate, with waves of cassis, rosebud and liquorice root, melted cocoa and campfire smoke, totally charming and very St Julien, but the architecture remains fairly tight on the finish, and it will benefit from a little longer in bottle. Eric Boissenot consultant, 50% new oak. Harvest September 28 to October 13. Drinking range: 2024 - 2042 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, Decanter (Oct 2024)
The 2010 Gruaud Larose has a more capable nose than the previous vintage, with layers of red and black fruit, a touch of garrigues and pressed flowers. Lovely delineation, this gains intensity with aeration and shades the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh and vibrant. It has better salinity than the 2009 with a little more finesse on the finish than it was showing several years ago. This is certainly moving in a positive direction. Tasted at the Gruaud Larose vertical at the château in February 2023. Drinking range: 2026 - 2050 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2024)
As with so many 2010s, this is barely out of the starting blocks even at 11 years old. Majoring on black chocolate shavings, espresso, cassis and bilberry fruits, powerful tannins with muscles but also juice, precision, all carefully chiselled to support the fruit. Extremely spicy, with black pepper and more exotic turmeric, showing that ripe Cabernet Sauvignon does a great job of delivering the spicy elements that Petit Verdot often brings. Eric Boissenot had arrived as consultant in 2006, so this was his 4th vintage. 50% new oak. Harvest September 28 to October 13. Drinking range: 2021 - 2042 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Nov 2021)
Château Gruaud Larose
St Julien Deuxième cru 1855 The story of Château Gruaud Larose starts with Joseph Stanislas Gruaud who developed the estate in the early 18th Century. Two of his descendents ended up with different halves of the Gruaud estate until, in 1778, Chevalier de Gruaud died and left his portion to his son-in-law Joseph Sébastien de la Rose who immediately appended his name to the estate. Gruaud-Larose was split further in 1867, with Château Gruaud-Larose-Sarget and Château Gruaud-Larose-Faure being seperate until 1935 when the Cordier family, who'd bought the Sarget half in 1919, bought Gruaud-Larose-Faure and put the old estate back together again. Ownership by the Cordiers, and the association with other similarly labelled wines in the portfolio - Talbot, Meyney - kept Château Gruaud Larose as a consistent favourite among Bordeaux lovers. Gruaud-Larose is now owned by the Taillan Group. There are 82ha of vineyard, just to the south west of Beychevelle - 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. A second wine was introduced in 1979 - Sarget de Gruaud-Larose. Gruaud-Larose is among the fuller-bodied styles of St Julien, producing consistently good wines and, whilst the crown of "best estate in St Julien" sits with Leoville Las Cases, the wines of Gruaud-Larose are always worth following.
