95% Syrah, aged for 18 months in 300 litre used French hogsheads. Extraordinarily pure currant and berry fruit, intense and ripe but with charming finesse, an almost Pinot-like silky feel and a refreshing finish. Certainly more ‘Syrah’ than ‘Shiraz’, as you might expect from Austrian winemaker Bert Soloman. Will enrich any dinner table. Drinking range: 2012 - 2020 L&S (Jun 2014)

96% shiraz, 4% viognier. You’d call it a light, perfumed, elegant style – an Australian “syrah” – but it does carry quite a lot of oak. Thing is, it carries it well, despite its obviousness. Awash with sweet blueberry and black cherry, it’s a juicy wine with deliciousness written all over it. I had serious trouble keeping my mits offov it. Very fine tannin. Perfectly judged acidity. Salomon Estate

Bert Salomon's Australian vineyard holdings are in the Finniss River region, on the Fleurieu Peninsula, just south of Adelaide. Founded by his ancestors in 1866, the current generation followed his lead over a hundred years later to make wines with the same meticulous care that they follow in the Wachau, Austria.
For local knowledge and expertise, Bert has been helped from the outset by his longtime friend Mike Farmilo, who was Penfold’s chief red winemaker until 1997. It has clearly been a winning combination.
