Bert Salomon’s great great uncle, Johann Nepomuk Hinterocker, beat him to Australia by over 100 years, arriving in 1866 to join the Jesuits and make wine at the Sevenhill Winery in Clare Valley. He later founded St Ignatius College in Norwood, a suburb of Adelaide. Bert named this wine in his honour. It’s quite a classic Aussie red with plump plum and berry fruit with a subtle lightly-spiced edge. Super with a nice roast dinner, especially gammon or pork where the intense fruit comes to the fore. Dark purple. Aromas of blackberry liqueur, cherry pit and licorice show good depth and an enlivening hint of allspice. Fleshy and seamless, offering sweet black and blue fruit flavors that are given bite by a hint of tangy acidity. Clings with very good tenacity on the finish, which is framed by velvety, slow-building tannins. Highly appealing right now. Rating: 90 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar(Jul 2014)
Eucalyptus, menthol, black olive, graphite, cinnamon sticks, star anise, gingerbread spices, dense and lush, beautifully presented, plum jam, pipe tobacco, very fine wood, great substance. ***** A la Carte Magazine, AustriaPress Reviewer(Jul 2013)
OUr great friends the fabulous Salomon family famous in Austria for the historic estate also have this sensationbal outpost in Australia - Salomon Estate. Here they make elegant Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Atop the rolling hills of the Finniss River wine-growing area the grapes ripen in an idyllic micro-climate. Finniss River extends along the southeast shoulder of the Adelaide Hills, part of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Salomon Estate wines mirror the unique qualities of this landscape: you can feel the midday sun in their fruits and the chilled air of the nearby Southern Ocean in their acids. These exceptional wines reflect the fruit of Australia with a European approach to winemaking. Bert, Gertrud, Fay Marie and young Bert Salomon bridge the old and the new wine world. Harvesting twice a year they commute between Finniss River/Australia and their famous white wine estate Salomon Undhof – Austria, which they manage in the eighth generation. Always one to make the right decisions at the right time, Bert is helped by iconic Australian winemaker Mike Farmilo, longtime friend and former chief red winemaker at Penfolds.
